FTII row: 10 more filmmakers return national awards

EFT Report, Pune: In a dramatic development, 10 prominent filmmakers returned various awards and honours to the government, protesting impediments to freedom of speech and expression and showing solidarity with the FTII students, here on Wednesday.

The filmmakers are Anand Patwardhan, Dipankar Banerjee, Paresh Kamdar, Nishtha Jain, Kirti Nakhwa, Harshavardhan Kulkarni, Hari Nair, Rakesh Sharma, Indraneel Lahiri and Lipika Singh Darai.

"As filmmakers, we stand firmly with the students of FTII and are determined to not let them shoulder the entire burden of their protests. They have mounted a historic struggle and we urge others within our fraternity to come forward and carry this protest forward," a memorandum signed by the filmmakers said.

The development came hours after three prominent alumni of the Film & Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, announced they would return their national awards to protest against what they termed "an atmosphere of intolerance" in the country in last few months.

They are: Vikrant Pawar of Maharashtra, Rakesh Shukla of Uttar Pradesh and Prateek Vats of Goa.

Pawar had bagged the President's Gold Medal for his film, 'Kaatal' in the Best Short Fiction category in 2012.

Shukla won the Special Mention Award at the National Students Film Festival in 2013 for his film 'Donkey Fair'.

Vats bagged the Rajat Kamal Award for Best Short Fiction for his film, 'Kal, 15 August, Dukan Band Rahegi' in 2010.

The decision by the filmmakers came shortly after the FTII students announced end to their 139-day long strike, but resolve to continue their agitation peacefully to protest against the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as FTII chairman.

Pawar said now the issue has "gone beyond FTII" and is affecting the entire education system of the country, right from the primary school levels, which is being changed without taking into account aspects which concern the society at large.

Pawar, Shukla and Vats join the long list of various scholars, intellectuals, writers, artistes and others who have returned various national awards and honours across the country in the past few days.

Fatboy Slim, Tiesto, Ferry Corsten to perform at EVC 2015

EFT Report, New Delhi: The beats and tunes of world renowned DJs Tiesto, Fatboy Slim and Ferry Corsten will be plugging in the cord of electronic dance music (EDM) into the Enchanted Valley Carnival 2015 (EVC), scheduled to be held in December in Pune.

Universal Music Group, a music company, on Thursday announced a partnership with Twisted Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., under which both parties will take equal stakes in the three-day camping music festival, which will start on December 18 at Aamby Valley City Festival Arena, Pune.

Devraj Sanyal, managing director and CEO at Universal Music Group, South Asia, says the music company aims to inject more energy into the music fest making the third edition of the music fest "bigger and better".

"We have announced three names today -- TiĆ«sto, Fatboy Slim (Norman Cook) and Ferry Corsten-- and over the next 30-60 days we will announce other artists. We are using all our energy and all our network to try and push this as much we can. And, yes people can expect to see names of more Universal Music artists in the coming line-up," Sanyal told IANS.

He added: "In the next three-four years, we want EVC to be the largest standalone multi-genre festival".

The carnival is a multi-genre music festival that inter weaves the fun of musical performances, adrenaline-pumping adventure sports with camping experience.

Sanyal said that they aim to move to the next step this year by becoming "cashless".

"We are spending energy on our sources to make the experience of EVC phenomenal. You don't have to stand in line for using restroom for many hours, wait for long for a drink, and we are also trying to make the entire festival go cashless," Sanyal noted.

Another highlight for the upcoming edition is that fest plans to bring the experience of a mystical world where ancient meets modern with a new call-out - "#JoinTheTribe" - to build a community and belonging for like-minded and passionate people.

India’s First Electronic Toll Collection System Launched

Report by Santanu Ganguluy, Mumbai: India today joined the ranks of USA, Western Europe, Singapore and Australia, with the introduction of a technology driven highway toll collection system.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Dr. C P Joshi, launched the first Inter-operable, Electronic Toll Collection System based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Technology at Toll Plazas of Mumbai–Vadodara Section. The launch function was held at village Tawa, near Dahanu in Thane district.

How it Works:

RFID tag will be a prepaid tag which will be affixed in the upper central portion of the vehicle’s windscreen. It will work as a prepaid toll account and there will be automatic toll deduction when the vehicle crosses a toll plaza.

India’s First Electronic Toll Collection System Launched
CP Joshi at India’s 1st Electronic Toll Collection System Launch
The unique number of the Tag fitted on the windscreen of the vehicle would be read by the ‘readers’ fitted in the dedicated “ETC” lanes of these plazas, and sent to the Central Clearing House, set up by the ICICI Bank in collaboration with American firm Toll Plus. The user will get an instant SMS alert as well as email update. The Clearing House pools the money collected electronically and later distributes among toll plaza managements as per usage by vehicles.

This facility has been made available at the IRB Toll Plaza, Charoti, IRB Toll plaza Bhagwada, IRB Toll plaza Boriach, IRB Toll Plaza Choriyasi, NHAI Toll plazas at Narmada Bridge and L&T IDPL Toll Plaza at Karjan and Vadodara.

Soon it will be extended to Vadodara-Ahmedabad Section of the National Highway and the Mumbai–Pune section as well.

The RFID tags can be bought at identified kiosks located near toll plazas. They can also be bought online through the website of ICICI Bank. The tags can be recharged both at the kiosks, as well as through the ICICI Bank website.

Acceptance of the new system by people would mean long queues and fumbling for change at toll plazas would become a matter of past.

The recommendation for introduction of Electronic Toll Collection System was made by an Expert Committee headed by Nandan Nilekani, to ease traffic flow and introduce transparency in toll collection.

Nation-Wide Implementation:

The success of this pilot project would pave way for nation-wide implementation of interoperable Electronic Toll Collection. The National Highways Authority of India has formed a new Company – Indian Highways Management Co.Ltd with equity participation from concessionaires and financial institutions to implement electronic toll collection. It has already begun the process of engaging agencies for providing clearing house support, tag distribution and equipment installation in toll plazas.

Cashless Medical Treatment for Road Accident Victims:

Union Road Transport Minister C P Joshi, announced that victims of road accident on Mumbai-Vadodara stretch would be provided with cashless medical treatment as immediate relief.

Underlining the increasing presence of his Ministry on the social media, the Minister said that complaints about road conditions may be posted on the Facebook page of NHAI or Ministry of Road Transport, which will be attended to in a fixed time-frame.

India has one of the largest road networks in the world. Approximately, 13,000 kms length of roads are under tolling through 220 toll plazas. The toll collection during 2012-13 was in excess of Rs 9,000 crores.

Maharashtra Celebrates Gudi Padwa Today

EFT Report, Mumbai: Gudhi Padwa is a famous Hindu festival and Marathi New Year, which is being celebrated this year on April 11. Gudhi Padwa, the Marathi name for Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, marks the beginning of the Chaitra month and consequently the New Year, according to the lunisolar Hindu calendar.

Maharashtra Celebrates Gudi Padwa, Marathi New Year
Gudi Padwa, Marathi New Year
Families spend their day making bright rangolis outside their houses and a gudhi (compromising of green or yellow cloth tied to the tip of a long bamboo over which sugar crystals, neem leaves, a twig of mango leaves and a garland of red flowers is tied. A silver or copper pot is placed in the inverted position over it) which they stick out of their window.

According to the Hindu belief, one of the many significances of the gudhi is its symbolism as Lord Bramha's flag, who is believed to have created the world on this auspicious day. Gudhi is also believed to ward off evil, invite prosperity and good luck into the house.

The traditional outfit for Gudhi Padwa is the nauvari sari (traditional Maharashtrian sari) for women and kurta pajama for men.

For all those with a sweet tooth, Gudhi Padwa has much to offer! A paste of Neem leaves and gur (jaggery) is traditionally eaten first, as it is representative of the bitter and sweet things in life.

Aam Panna (tangy drink made from raw mangoes), puran poli (sweet-stuffed bread) and shrikhand (saffron flavoured sweet yogurt) are some of the sweets worth trying this season.

Govt. to Launch Child Health Screening Program on Feb. 6

EFT Bureau, Pune: The National Rural Health Mission of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India will launch a new initiative of Child Health Screening and Early Intervention Services to provide comprehensive care to all the children. The purpose of these services is to improve the overall quality of life of children through early detection of birth defects, diseases, deficiencies, development delays including disability.

The Program will be launched by Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson, UPA from Palghar, a Tribal Block in Thane district, Maharashtra on Feb. 6, 2013 in the presence of Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad, Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare and Mr. Prithviraj Chavan, Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

Govt. to Launch Child Health Screening Program on Feb. 6
Child Health Screening Program
It may be mentioned that the burden of birth defects, development delays due to deficiencies and diseases is significant in children. This is also one of the important factors for child mortality and out of pocket expenditure for poor families. Birth defects account for 9.6% of all new-born deaths and 4% of under five mortality. According to March of Dimes, 2006, out of every 100 babies born in this country annually, 6 to 7 have a birth defect. In Indian context, this would translate to 17 lakhs birth defects annually. Development delays affect at least 10% children and these delays if not intercepted timely may lead to permanent disabilities including cognitive, hearing or vision.

A set of thirty common conditions have been identified for screening and further management. These services are built on the existing school health services and these services will be provided through dedicated mobile health teams placed in every block. The block level dedicated mobile medical health teams would comprise of four health personnel viz. two AYUSH doctors (One Male, One Female), ANM/ SN and a Pharmacist. The teams will carry out screening of all the children in the age group 0–6 years enrolled at Anganwadi centres at least twice a year besides screening of all children enrolled in Government and Government aided schools. The newborns will also be screened for birth defects in health facilities where deliveries take place and during the home visit by ASHA. An estimated 27-crore children in the age group of zero to eighteen years are expected to be covered in a phased manner.

The District Early Intervention Centre is envisaged to be made operational in all districts of the country for providing management of these referred cases from the blocks and will also link these cases with tertiary level health services in case of surgical management. The existing services from Ministry of Women and Child, Social Justice and empowerment and Education will also be optimally utilized. Necessary treatment costs would be provided under National Rural Health Mission to tertiary level institutions whether in Government or Private sector. The implementation of these services will also generate country wide epidemiological data on selected health conditions for improved future planning of health services.

Early identification of select health conditions and their linkage to care, support and treatment, under Child Health Screening and Early Intervention Services will help to achieve equitable child health care. In the long run, the Program would prove economical for the poor and marginalized through reducing out of pocket expenditure, burden of diseases, improving health awareness among community, improving the professionalism in service delivery and finally strengthening the public sector hospitals. This would lead to promotion of health among children which is of fundamental value to the entire nation.
