FIFA World Cup qualifier: Iran beat India 3-0

EFT Report, Bengaluru: Asian powerhouse Iran turned in a brilliant second-half performance to overwhelm India 3-0 in the second round of the FIFA World Cup qualifying competition here on Tuesday.

Goals by Iranian heartthrob Sardar Azmoun (29th minute), Andranik Teymourian (47th) and Mehdi Taromi (51st) helped Iran to chalk up their second win in three outings while India slid to their third consecutive defeat following similar 1-2 losses to Oman and Guam.

The fitter, faster and more skillful Iranians were far too better drilled than the Indians who after an enthusiastic first-half display that saw them deny the visitors for nearly 30 minutes, faded away on resumption of play.

It turned out to be a gross mismatch between two teams that provided a study in contrast in preparation and team work with the Iranians showing whey they qualified four times for the World Cup.

Barring the goal, the first half was fairly evenly contested though the Indians were under more pressure with the visitors peppering their goal with shots from every conceivable angle and asking questions of goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu.

From the home perspective, much of the credit should go to the defenders who did well to repeatedly thwart the Iranian forays for close to half-hour until the pressure told on them.

The Indian deep defence allowed Azmoun to head the ball home off a brilliant, long free-kick by Andranik Teymourian following a foul on Haji Saji by Eugeneson Lyngdoh.

At the other end, the Indians tried hard to breach a tight Iranian defence and barely got a look-in and the star goalkeeper Ali Reza Haghihi was hardly tested.

The second-half turned out to be a watershed as Iran struck two stunning goals in a four-minute spell that totally demoralised the Indians who committed two unpardonable mistakes.

The hosts first allowed Taromi to head back an outgoing ball to Andranik to blast home and then Taromi was let free to score off a pass from Azmoun.

Thereafter, the Iranians toyed with their rivals, while virtually flexing their muscles. The Indians proved unequal to the task of matching the highly physical game of the visitors for whom the outing proved to be a breeze.

India did show some spirit in the last quarter when they forced a couple of corners, but to no avail as the Iranians, quicker on the ball, comfortably repelled the attacks to come out worthy winners.

Indian coach Stephen Constantine made as many as 11 changes to the side that was held goalless by Nepal in a friendly match recently, while his counterpart Carlos Queiroz fielded, barring two substitutions, virtually an unchanged combination that had beaten Guam 6-0 in their previous qualification game.

IPL 2014 Final: Kings XI vs Knight Riders

EFT Report, Bangalore: Storming into an Indian Premier League (IPL) final for the first time, Kings XI Punjab are all charged up to take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Sunday, June 1, 2014.

Though Kings lost to Knights by 28 runs in the first qualifier in Kolkata on Wednesday, they bounced back to beat Chennai Super Kings by 24 runs for the third time to make their first appearance in IPL final.

With dashing opener Virendra Sehwag back in form, as evident Friday from his flamboyant 122 in 58 balls (8x6, 12x4) against CSK, Kings' middle order - Glenn Maxwell, David Miller and captain George Bailey - have to fire again as in the league games, which made them head the points table (22), with a record 11 wins and three losses.

In their league encounters, both the finalists had the honours of winning and losing to each other.

After Kings won by 23 runs at Abu Dhabi April 26 during the tournament's first leg, Knights avenged this by winning by nine wickets at Cuttack May 11.

Interestingly, while Kings won all its five league ties in the UAE leg, Knights bounced back with seven consecutive wins in the tournament's domestic leg against other teams, resulting in grabbing 18 points from nine wins and five losses.

Knights were title holders in 2012 having beaten CSK in Chennai, while the former won twice (2010, 2011) and were runners up thrice -- in 2008 against Rajasthan, 2012 against Knights and Mumbai Indians 2013.

Kings bowlers will be under pressure again, as they were against CSK whose south paw Suresh Raina exposed their chinks Friday with an explosive innings of 87 in just 25.

But for a smart run-out by Bailey when Raina was in full cry after posting 100 runs on board in just six overs of power-play, Kings would not have been in finals even through eliminator.

While Kings will bet on Mitchell Johnson and Parvinder Awana for early breakthrough, onus will be on Sandeep Sharma and Akshar Patel containing Knights' marauders like its orange cap holder and opener Robin Uttappa, captain Gautham Gambhir, Manish Pandey and the unpredictable Yusuf Pathan, who can script victory at ease.

Similarly, Knights' bowling quartet, led by wily spinners Sunil Narine and Piyush Chawla and pacers Morne Morkel and Umesh Yadav will face the heat if Kings' Sehwag, Maxwell and Miller get going on a batting wicket under floodlights in front a 40,000-strong packed stadium.

Toss and truant weather will also play a key role, as a spell of pre-monsoon rain or thunder showers is forecast for Sunday night.

Teams

Kings: Manan Vohra, Virender Sehwag, Glenn Maxwell, David Miller, George Bailey (c), Wriddhiman Saha (k), Akshar Patel, Mitchell Johnson, Rishi Dhawan, Karanveer Singh, Parvinder Awana, Shivam Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Shaun Marsh, Gurkeerat Singh Mann, Mandeep Singh, Anureet Singh, Beuran Hendricks, Murali Kartik, Shardul Thakur, Lakshmipathy Balaji and Sandeep Sharma,

Referred to as one of the most successful Olympic athletes of all time, Carl has competed in four Olympic Games. He won nine gold medals, including four at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. His Olympic gold medals came first in 1984 in the 100 metres, where he set an Olympic record by besting the next closest runner by a record eight feet, 200 metres, 4×100 metres relay and long jump.  At the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, Carl won gold in the 100-metre final and was credited with a world record. His world record in the indoor long jump has remained unbeaten since 1984 and a stunning 65 consecutive victories in long jump, achieved over a span of 10 years, is one of the sport’s longest undefeated streaks.
Over the course of his athletics career, Lewis broke ten seconds for the 100 metres 15 times and 20 seconds for the 200 metres 10 times. Not surprising that the International Olympic Committee voted Carl ‘Sportsman of the Century’, the International Association of Athletics Federations elected him ‘World Athlete of the Century’, and the American sports magazine Sports Illustrated named him ‘Olympian of the Century’. He is truly one of the most renowned Olympians of all time.
The sporting great announced his retirement from competitive sport after the 1996 Olympics. Carl’s work off the track helped give track and field its current professional status, enabling athletes to have more rewarding and longer-lasting careers in the sport.

World’s Premier 10K Run in Bangalore on May 18

Report by Santanu Ganguly: A faceoff between some of the world’s fastest track athletes and their road running counterparts will feature the TCS World 10K Bangalore 2014, the seventh edition of the World’s Premier 10K Run, which will be flagged off from the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Sunday, May 18.

In the six years since its inception, the World 10K Bangalore has added to the Garden City’s reputation as a ‘Global Running Destination’. The world’s leading track and long distance athletes will once again descend into the Garden City, where they will be joined by India’s best running talent and thousands from the running fraternity to help Bangalore live up to its reputation as the host city of a major international running event.

The seventh edition, and the fourth under the title sponsorship of Tata Consultancy Services, the TCS World 10K Bangalore, promises to be the biggest and best as yet.

Besides the faceoff between the best of track and road running, the event will also see course record and timing bonuses for Indian athletes, and the launch of a limited edition Official ‘Race Day’ Tee, available exclusively for the participants of the TCS World 10K to add more colour to the 2014 edition.
Continuing to give a further fillip to the event will be Superstar Puneet Rajkumar as the ‘Face of the Event’, who has committed all his support and efforts to help promote the event and propagate the running movement across the length and breadth of Karnataka state.

These initiatives, along with the launch of registrations were announced by Nagraj Ijari, Vice President & Global Head of Hi-tech Vertical, Tata Consultancy Services at a grand launch press conference held at Regency I in the ITC, Windsor Bengaluru, the Hospitality Partner to the event on Thursday. Also present at the occasion was Shri K G George, Home Minister, Govt. of Karnataka and Vishal Jhunjhunwala, Head - Corporate Brand and Events, Tata Consultancy Services).
The favourite of Karnataka’s masses, Superstar Puneet Rajkumar was also present as the ‘Face of the Event’, along with representatives from the Karnataka Athletics Association and city custodians.

Mr. N Chandrasekaran, CEO & MD of Tata Consultancy Services, who could not be present at the launch of the event due to prior commitments, had this to say, “Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has been associated with the TCS World 10K Bangalore for four years and we are extremely proud of the fact that the event has grown in popularity and stature as the city's premier athletic event. With the citizens embracing this event as their own, we hope to see more and more people participate in large numbers in this year’s run. As an organisation that has a young workforce, we encourage our associates to live a healthy and active lifestyle and a focus on wellness is an important part of our corporate culture. We will have over 3,500 TCSers and their families participating across various categories in this year’s event while promoting our TCS Fit4Life programme."

The city of Bangalore first experienced the magic of running in 2008 when its citizens welcomed the inaugural edition of the World 10K with great enthusiasm. Since then the number of participants has swelled to around 23,000 amid efforts from promoters Procam International, along with support from the partners to the event, to convert fun runners into serious fitness and running enthusiasts and has led to around 11,000 amateurs attempting the full distance in the Open 10K category, last year.

NIKE Official Race Day Tee: For the first time, Nike announced the launch of the official race day tee exclusively for the TCS World 10K Bangalore. To help keep runners dry and cool during the race, this innovative performance tee is made out of 100% polyester, yet has a soft hand feel. It is designed from some of Nike’s most advanced and globally renowned technologies such as the ultra-lightweight Nike Dri-FIT. This limited edition race day tee in a striking bright crimson colour with the words ‘RUN BANGALORE ’ and a gold ‘Swoosh’ will be available for runners to buy at Rs. 795 only.

For more information on where to purchase the tee, participants can log on to nikerunning.in.

New Course record on the cards: A 10K road race demands a high octane combination of endurance and speed and the TCS World 10K Bangalore, 2014 is once again expected to attract the world’s best long distance runners and track & field stars. With the efforts of Procam International and Global Sports Communication (GSC), the Elite Athlete Coordinators, the focus will also be on lowering the existing course records.

Bangalore is thus set for a scorching race on May 18 and an incentive bonus of USD 7,500 is on offer for new course records, if set. The Indian athletes too have an incentive bonus of Rs 2.00 lakh each for men and women, if they lower the existing Indian course records.

There are also timing bonuses for Indian athletes if they miss out on the course records. Any of the Indian men finishing below 30.05 minutes stand to gain a bonus of Rs 1 lakh and Rs 50,000 if they finish below 30.15. The Indian women stand to gain a bonus of Rs 1 lakh for finishing below 34.45 and Rs 50,000 if they finish below 35 minutes.

The overall men’s course record stands at 27.51, set by Eritrean Zersenay Tadesse in 2008, while the women’s course record of 31.58 was set by Ethiopian Yimer Wude in 2010. The Indian men’s course record stands at 29.59, set by Kashinath Asawale in 2008, while for Indian women it is 34.32, set by Kavita Raut in 2009.
The DHL Corporate Challenge: This category is open to Corporate teams to make the running experience more fulfilling and competitive for the serious corporate runner. The winning team will now take home Rs 1,00,000, with the runner-up team winning Rs 75,000. The next three finishers will stand to gain Rs 50,000; Rs 36,000 and Rs 30,000 respectively.

The three-member team will need to have two men and one woman, with each member needing to complete the full distance of 10 km. The average of the net finish timings of all three runners will decide the finish positions in this category.

Showcasing Bangalore’s giving side: The charity drive associated with the TCS World 10K Bangalore, spearheaded by Bangalore Cares, the Charity Partner to the event, is poised for a quantum leap this year.

This is in keeping with the trend witnessed over the last six editions of the event, which is a healthy indication that Bangalore has a strong giving side. The amounts raised for charity through the World’s Premier 10K Run had increased from Rs 41.35 lacs in the first year, to Rs 1.31 crores in the second year, Rs 1.41 crores in 2010 and to Rs 1.85 crores in 2011 and Rs 3.06 crores in 2012. The last edition saw Rs 3.71 crores being raised in clearly tracked figures and going by the trend, this edition should see a substantial increase.

In the last six years the World 10K Bangalore has helped generate close to Rs 12 crore towards charity, propelling this event to amongst the largest charity raising events in the state of Karnataka.

The TCS World 10K Bangalore, an event certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) is being held under the aegis of the Athletics Federation of India and is supported by the Karnataka Athletics Association. Around 24,000 people are expected to be a part of this momentous event on 18TH May, participating in the eight events of the day.

Godrej Properties Golf Challenge 2014 Set for Biggset Edition Ever

Report by Santanu Ganguly: The annual Godrej Properties Intra Club Golf Challenge is back with its third edition and this year’s event is set to be the biggest one yet.
Buoyed by the success of last season’s event which involved 800-odd amateur golfers from four of the leading golf clubs in the country, promoters Godrej Properties have opted to raise the tournament’s profile even further.
This year’s event will witness seven city rounds, including stop overs at four new locations, and an increase in the total number of participating golfers to an approximate 1000.  And like in 2013, the event will once again culminate in an International Finals showdown in Bangkok where the respective winners from each city will battle it out.
The action tees off on 25th January with simultaneous rounds at the Willingdon Sports Club in Mumbai and at the Qutub Golf Course in Delhi, the first of the new venues added to this year’s itinerary. The Classic Golf Resort in Gurgaon stages round three on 1st February followed by another double header on 9th February at Madras Gymkhana Club in Chennai and Royal Calcutta Golf Club, Kolkata which replaces the Tollygunge Golf Club from the 2013 list of hosts. Noida Golf Course, the third addition to this year’s event, takes centre stage on 14th February 2014, with the club rounds winding up in Bangalore on 21st February at Bangalore Golf Club which takes the place of Karnataka Golf Association this time.
“The results of expanding the Godrej Properties Golf Challenge from a one city event to a four city event last year were there for all to see,” said Girish Shah, Executive Vice President of Godrej Properties. “We were obviously encouraged by those results and felt there was scope for further improvisation this year. Having new clubs enter the fray makes the competition that much more exciting.”
The tournament will again follow the Stableford Points System across two handicap categories: 0-12 & 13-24 (3/4 Nett Stableford Points). Any member of a participating club can play in the tournament provided they have a valid handicap from that club. The top player in each handicap category from each of the seven clubs will then earn a chance to compete in the International Finals scheduled to take place from 26th to 28th February in Bangkok.
Professional Management Group will be the event managers and will be responsible for the entire functioning of the tournament.
