Oil drops below $40 after 11 years

EFT Report, New Delhi: International crude oil prices plunged to fresh lows with the price of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) basket of twelve crudes going below the $40 a barrel level for the first time in 11 years.

The new OPEC reference basket of 12 crude oils closed at $39.21 a barrel on the previous trading day on Friday, the organisation's secretariat said. On Thursday, the price stood at $40.21. The last time it fell to $39 was in 2004.

Oil prices have been under pressure for several months due to concerns over oversupply, but the slump has deepened in the recent period.

Crude-oil production has remained robust despite the large drop in prices in the last year, as US producers continue to cut costs and members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries continue to produce at full tilt.

The Indian basket, comprising 73 percent sour-grade Dubai and Oman crude, and the balance in sweet-grade Brent, plunged to $41.39 on Friday.

Meanwhile, state-run Indian Oil Corp on Sunday announced a hike in the price of petrol by 36 paise a litre and of diesel by 87 paise at Delhi, effective Monday.

"The current level of international product prices of petrol and diesel and INR-USD exchange rate warrant an increase in prices, the impact of which is being passed on to the consumers with this price revision," Indian Oil said in a statement here.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Monday termed the reason for fuel price hike as unjustifiable when there is no change in the international price of crude oil.

While the latest fuel hike was part of the routine fortnightly price revision exercise by oil marketing companies, it should be considered that the Indian basket price in the preceding fortnight ranged between $44-46 a barrel.

The latest drop in global prices could possibly be reflected in the next fortnight's price revision.

"Under this MoU, RDL and ADSB are investigating the opportunity to set up a strategic partnership for the construction of naval ships - including frigates, destroyers and other specialized vessels - to address the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) over the next 10 years," said a Reliance Group statement here.

The agreement could also see ADSB delivering maintenance, repair, overhaul and refit services to the vessels, in line with regional requirements, it said.

Abu Dhabi Ship Building is a provider of construction, repair and refit services for naval, military and commercial vessels.

Duminy Helps Daredevils Win Against KKR

EFT Report, Dubai: J.P. Duminy played a thrilling innings to take the Delhi Daredevils to a four-wicket win over the Kolkata Knight Riders in an Indian Premier League (IPL) clash at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Saturday, April 19, 2014.

Chasing a challenging target of 167, the South African played a swashbuckling knock of 52 not out to take the Daredevils home with a six - with three balls to spare.

Daredevils opener Murali Vijay did not give the team the start they required, getting out for a duck on his second delivery. However, Mayank Agarwal (26 off 14) looked impressive but got caught in a soft dismissal at square leg. New Zealand's Ross Taylor (6) also got out soon after but captain Dinesh Karthik kept the flow of runs going for his team.

Karthik, who got out for zero in his last match, looked in sublime touch as he scored a fluent 56 off 40 deliveries, including five fours and two sixes. He also got good support from Duminy, who had also struck an important half-century in their opening match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore Thursday.

Just when it was looking that the Daredevils would romp home thanks to Karthik, mystery spinner Sunil Narine turned the tables by getting the captain out leg before wicket.

Duminy now decided to take the role of the anchor as piled as he smashed three sixes and boundaries each. Manoj Tiwary (8) and James Neehsam (8) did not get many runs but stuck in their to aid Duminy, who appeared a man on a mission.

Morne Morkel's 18th over proved to be the difference when Duminy smashed 21 runs off the over, including two sixes and a boundary to bring down the asking rate to 11 off 12.

Delhi suffered a hiccup or two but reached home with another Duminy six to bag the team's first win of the tournament.

Earlier, the Knight Riders recovered from an early slump to put up a fighting total of 166/5.

The 2012 edition champions had a disastrous start after electing to bat as both openers Gautam Gambhir and Jacques Kallis got out for a duck. It was the second successive zero for captain Gambhir, who played on a Nathan Coulter-Nile delivery to backward short leg.

However, Manish Pandey (48) and Robin Uthappa (55) took control of the ship and steered it through the middle overs. The duo provided stability to the innings by a 64-run third-wicket partnership to take the team out of trouble.

The Daredevils bowlers, however, managed to keep a check on the economy rate and did not allow the Knight Riders batsmen to go for the shots. Trying to accelerate, Pandey perished when he was bowled by spinner Shahbaz Nadeem.

But Bangladeshi all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan (30 not out) provided good support to Uthappa, who went on to score a half-century. The explosive batsman hit six boundaries and a six in his 41-ball knock before getting out. Their partnership of 57 runs also came at a good time for the team.

Some lusty blows towards the end by Al Hasan took the Kolkata-based team to a 150-par score. Later, Suryakumar Yadav (8 not out) hit two boundaries off the last two balls to take his team to a fighting total.

Brief scores:
Kolkata Knight Riders 166/5 in 20 overs (Robin Uthappa 55, Manish Pandey 48, Shakib Al Hasab 30 not out; Nathan Coulter-Nile 2/27, Jaydev Unadkat 1/25, Shahbaz Nadeem 1/29) lost to Delhi Daredevils 167/6 in 19.3 overs (Dinesh Karthik 56, JP Duminy 52 not out, Mayank Agarwal 26; Morne Morkel 2/41, Jacques Kallis 1/15, Sunil Narine 1/18)

TCA Abu Dhabi to Exhibit 100 of World’s Most Compelling Objects

Report by Santanu Ganguly: Offering a flavor of the eagerly anticipated Zayed National Museum, TCA Abu Dhabi has collaborated with the British Museum to present A History of the World in 100 Objects; an inspiring exhibition that captures both the history of the world and the significant role the Middle East has played within it, through a vivid display of compelling objects. Third in a series of major exhibitions leading to the opening of Zayed National Museum in 2016, this exhibition will be held at Manarat Al Saadiyat in Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Cultural District from the23 April – 2 August; for a period of 100 days.

Inspired by a popular BBC radio series, A History of the World in 100 Objects features personal objects, such as the Chinese Jade Hair Ornament (dated c.3,500 BCE), whilst also showcasing other objects that were made for whole communities to use, including the Bird-shaped Pestle from Papua New Guinea (dated 6000 – 2000 BCE). Objects such as the Hebrew Astrolabe (dated 1345–1355 CE) from Spain, were designed to advance human understanding of the world around us, whilst others represent the surviving relics of lost civilisations, such as the Mexican Huastec Sculpture (900–1521 CE). Allowing visitors to travel back in time and across the globe, people can explore how humans have shaped the world, and been shaped by it.

HE Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chairman, TCA Abu Dhabi, said: “It is with great anticipation that we welcome some of the world’s most precious objects to Abu Dhabi for the A History of the World in 100 Objectsexhibition, which come together to illustrate a history of humanity.

“This exhibition, the latest in a series of major public exhibitions leading to the opening of Zayed National Museum, is another important milestone in Abu Dhabi’s developing cultural scene, as it builds momentum and inspires interest in the country’s first national federal museum, whilst placing the history of the UAE and its cultural significance within the context of the world.”

Neil MacGregor, Director of the British Museum, said: “I am delighted that the first exhibition project based on the ‘A History of the World’ series will be taking place in Abu Dhabi. Objects have a tremendous power and ability to tell stories, in many instances they are the only evidence we have for certain cultures so these kinds of temporary exhibitions, and indeed the permanent displays in Zayed National Museum, are hugely important to aid our understanding of the world.”

In line with some of the themes that will define Zayed National Museum, such as, faith and Islam, people and heritage, and science and learning, this exhibition will help visitors discover our common humanity and to understand the development of human cultures across the globe.

The exhibition also explores several important objects from the Middle East and the UAE. An intriguing burnt bowl introduces early cattle farming in Northern Iraq in 5600–5200 BCE, while the famous Royal Game of Ur invites visitors into the cosmopolitan world of the Sumerians, around 2,500 BCE. As the exhibition progresses, visitors will come across beautiful gold coins demonstrating the spread of Islam in the 7th Century. The last section of the exhibition features a remarkable foot-controlled car, invented by Emirati student Ms. Reem Al Marzouqi from the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) in 2013, which has the capacity to change the lives of disabled drivers.

Running alongside the exhibition will be a full public program of workshops, tours and seminars including an opening lecture titled ‘Unlocking Objects’ with Neil MacGregor, Director of the British Museum on the 22 April at 6.30pm. Located in a dramatic new building at the centre of the Saadiyat Cultural District, and commanding views of Abu Dhabi and the Gulf beyond, Zayed National Museum will establish the first federal national museum for the UAE. The museum will celebrate the unification of the Emirates and their transformation into a modern nation under Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (1918–2004) – the ‘Father of the Nation’. It will also be a place for the Emirati people to honour their cultural heritage and explore and affirm their identity and the connections they have shared with the wider world for thousands of years. This free-to-access international centre of teaching and learning will enable visitors to encounter an unparalleled collection of art and artefacts from ancient and living cultures of the UAE, Arabia and the wider Middle East. As the centrepiece of a district devoted to culture, the arts and the finest 21st-century architecture, Zayed National Museum will sit alongside Louvre Abu Dhabi, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and a growing number of arts institutions to form a cultural hub of international significance.

2014 F1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi GP Tickets Go on Sale

Report by Santanu Ganguly: Yas Marina Circuit today announced an increase in capacity for the 2014 Formula One Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to cope with an expected record demand from fans.

An extension has been made to the popular Abu Dhabi Hill grassed area introduced last year - meaning it can now accommodate 3,000 more fans - and with the Paddock Club boosted by 1,500 extra guests, the event will now host 60,000. The previous record, set last year, was 55,000.

Tickets went on sale today online at www.yasmarinacircuit.com and through the Yas Marina Circuit Call Centre (800927) as well as through all Etihad Shops and www.ticketmaster.ae.

Organisers are responding to what is set to be the most exciting Formula One Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix ever, with the circuit hosting the last race of the season and, for the first time, double the points on offer to drivers.

Ticket prices for the four-day showpiece weekend, running from November 20 through to the November 23 Grand Prix, have been frozen at 2013 levels for 2014 and an incredible  ‘earlybird’ discount of up to 30% is being offered until May 31.

In addition to the range of Grand Prix tickets, a new ‘GP Parks Package’ will allow access to all four event days and entry to either Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, the world’s largest indoor theme park, or the award-winning Yas Waterworld aqua park. For overseas visitors Etihad Airways is also offering a number of all-inclusive packages, consisting of grandstand tickets, flights, hotel accommodation and more, which can be booked on the Etihad Airways website (www.etihad.com) and retail outlets.

All ticket holders will be able to watch the international artist concerts each night at the du Arena - and will be entered into a draw to win return economy flights for two people on the next generation Etihad Airways Boeing 787Dreamliner, which enters service later this year.

Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi will come alive with musical excitement with the return of Yasalam, the largest city-wide programme run by any F1 host city.

Al Tareq Al Ameri, CEO at Yas Marina Circuit, said: “Every year we strive to make this showpiece event better and offer more to the fans. We are constantly responding to what people want and this year we’re launching even more ticketing options and specially-created packages that really mean there is something for everyone.

“With an expected capacity crowd of 60,000, more fun activities for fans and double points for the final race – which means more exciting on-track action than ever - the atmosphere promises to be tremendous.”

More than 6,000 people have already pre-registered online, 80% of whom are from overseas. The number of international spectators is expected to rise from 43% to 46% with Abu Dhabi Tourism &Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) promoting tickets through 10 overseas offices.

Plans to deliver a bigger cultural experience in the Oasis Fan Village are in place, with initiatives to educate visitors about Abu Dhabi and the UAE’s rich history, diverse culture and vibrant society.

“This is a showcase that gives us the chance to speak to a worldwide audience within our home base,” said Faisal Al Sheikh, Director, Events Bureau, TCA Abu Dhabi. “We will deliver an engaging experience that hopefully will entice visitors to stay on after the race and discover more about our emirate and it’s rich culture.”

At the event, technology will play a bigger role, with greater fan involvement and even more opportunities for interaction and socializing through digital media.

Crowds will be wowed with a packed programme of world-class events including international performers, stunning firework displays and a of Etihad Airways’ new Dreamliner.

“As title sponsor of the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, we look forward to bringing even more visitors from across the world to experience the thrills of this year’s race weekend and the many other wonderful attractions in our Abu Dhabi home," said Peter Baumgartner, Chief Commercial Officer at Etihad Airways.
