IIFA to Premiere Anupam Kher’s Short Film ‘I Went Shopping for Robert De Niro’

Report by Santanu Ganguly, New Delhi: Recognizing the immense potential of Indian movies to cross boundaries and gain recognition as world class cinema, the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) will screen the directorial venture of renowned Indian and International actor, Anupam Kher which would be preceded by an acting workshop for the students of the University of South Florida. India’s biggest celebration of cinema- the 15^th VIDEOCON D2H IIFA Weekend and the Tata Motors IIFA Awards are all set to take place at Tampa Bay, Florida from April 23-26, 2014.

Having contributed immensely to the world of cinema in the last 30 years, Anupam Kher is undoubtedly one of the finest actors Indian cinema has ever seen. Kher has proved his mettle time and again playing diverse roles in over 460 films and numerous theatre productions. He has been a part of many Hindi-cinema classics, including A Wednesday, Lamhe, Khosla Ka Ghosla, Special 26, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge,  among others. Kher has also been a part of a number of crossover and mainstream Hollywood films including Midnight’s Children, Bend It Like Beckham, Bride & Prejudice, Woody Allen’s You Will Meet A Tall Dark Strangerand the Oscar nominated movie, Silver Linings Playbook. The actor currently runs India's finest acting school - ACTOR PREPARES.

Titled I WENT SHOPPING FOR ROBERT DE NIRO, Anupam Kher’s short film will have a World Premiere at IIFA on the 2^nd day of the Videocon D2H IIFA Weekend. The premiere will be open to celebrities from the Indian film fraternity, who will be seen attending the screening and lending support to the veteran actor. Through the film, Kher has paid tribute to iconic Hollywood actor Robert De Niro, his co-star from the Oscar nominated film- Silver Linings Playbook. The film’s writer and main actor, Shivangi Kshirsagar, who actually did go shopping for De Niro describes the film as wild, feminine, and brazen. She portrays the role of the girl who goes shopping for De Niro in the short-film and has tried to best represent what she has seen of De Niro’s work in the 29-minute short film.

Actor, Anupam Kher spoke of the film saying, “The film has had an exciting journey which came a sort of full circle for us on 10th November, 2013, when Mr De Niro visited our (acting) school and met the team. It was a very special occasion and I invited some prominent actors and directors from the Indian film industry to meet him. It was fun to watch some of our biggest stars sit around him – like students who crowd around their guru -- while De Niro patiently answered questions about his work, characters, scripts, co-actors, his films, his associations with filmmakers, etc. He graciously signed books, pictures and DVDs for everyone. It was such a memorable evening. He wrote a note for my students and teachers as well.”

“Having the World Premiere at IIFA in Tampa, Florida, showcases in essence the spirit of the short film, where a group of Indian artists pay tribute to the American legend, as India celebrates the centenary of Indian Cinema this year,” added Kher, who is sharing his craft through the acting workshop at IIFA Awards 2014, Tampa Florida.

Speaking on the acting workshop and premiere, Andre Timmins, Director – Wizcraft International & IIFA said, “IIFA has long endeavoured to introduce the short film into the Weekend. We want to promote different films and give opportunities to students to be a part of the Indian cinema and IIFA experience. We look forward to screening ‘I went shopping for Robert De Niro’. Mr Kher’s acting workshop, based on the techniques perfected at his acting studio Actor Prepares in Mumbai, was a major success at earlier IIFA celebrations and is a must-attend event in the Videocon D2H IIFA Weekend calendar. Led by the veteran actor, the Acting Workshop aims at helping acting enthusiasts decipher the craft of performance and dramatics while tapping into the potential of many a budding actor. The workshop will also throw light on various topics on Indian cinema and will provide guidance to those seeking a professional career within the acting fraternity. Nandita Das, Mahesh Dattani to Participate in 8-Day Actor-training Program

Report by Santanu Ganguly: Nandita Das, Mahesh Dattani and Subodh Maskara to collaborate with Australia's SDDS Education, University of Melbourne and the elite Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) in the delivery of a new Professional 8 Day Training Program for Indian actors in Mumbai. 

The high profile professionals have agreed to form part of a panel that will critically evaluate the final performance by a group of select actors chosen to participate in this 8-Day actor-training program. 

Prof. Dalip Sondhi (lead acting tutor and director – SDDS) and Ms Geraldine Cook (Senior Lecturer in Voice and Associate Dean University of Melbourne, VCA) will be teaching the actors and directing them towards this final performance of a Mahesh Dattani play.

Following on from the launch of their first Actor Training course with Naseeruddin Shah in Mumbai last June, SDDS Education continue to collaborate with high profile Indian industry professionals in the training of actors. 

These courses are primarily designed to identify, nurture and develop the incredible wealth of talent in India and construct international, as well as national, opportunities for the graduates.

SABAD: A 4-Day World Poetry Festival Begins in Delhi

Report by Santanu Ganguly, New Delhi: SABAD: A 4-Day World Poetry Festival was kicked off on March 21 and that will continue till March 24. Poets from 21 countries from across the 6 continents, including India are participating in the festival. Organized during the celebrations of 150^th Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda & 100^th year of Guru Rabindranath Tagore’s receiving the Nobel Prize. Festival features 11 Sessions of Poetry over 4 days and 2 cultural programs. Admission Free. The Inaugural Session of SABAD - the 4-day World Poetry Festival being organized by the Sahitya Akademi and Ministry of Culture in the Capital proved to be a very enlightening afternoon for those present in Meghdoot Theatre Complex of Sahitya Akademi, Mandi House, New Delhi.

Organised during the celebrations of 150^th Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda & 100^th year of Guru Rabindranath Tagore’s receiving the Nobel Prize promises to be an exhilarating showcase of diverse voices and sounds. The festival is a critical platform for self-expression that offers a space for cultural exchange in the capital city. It will comprise of 11 poetry sessions and 2 cultural programs which will be enriching for literary aficionados of the capital.

The festival’s line-up features an impressive list of poets from 21 countries from all the 6 continents. Among the prominent ones to grace the festival are George Szirtes (UK), Les Wicks (Australia), Kunwar Narain (India), Nikola Madzirov (Macedonia), Najwan Darwish (Palestine), Oscar Cruz (Cuba), Ingrid Storholmen (Norway), Pai Tafdrup (Denmark), Philip Nikolayev (USA), Tanure Ojaide (Nigeria).

The Inaugural session started with a welcome note by K Sreenivasarao, Secretary, Sahitya Akademi followed by the Presidential Address by Vishawanath Prasad Tiwari, President, Sahitya Akademi and Inaugural Address by George Szirtes (UK). Also present at the occasion were Kunwar Narain, Chief Guest; Ramakanta Rath, Guest of Honour; Chandrasekhar Kambara, Vice President, Sahitya Akademi. Some eminent poets like Les Wicks (Australia), Nikola Madzirov (Macedonia), Ingrid Fichtner (Germany), Najwan Darwish (Palestine), Desmond Kharmawphlang (India) regaled those present with the Inaugural readings.

During the inaugural session Vishawanath Prasad Tiwari, President, Sahitya Akademi said “While welcoming the delegates, press and literature aficionados during the inaugural session, the President said that it is always the best feeling to be in a voyage. He said that the voyage has more trial, tribulations and moments that can be cherished that to reach the goal itself.

He said poetry should be about the knowledge of all fields of human life than about the language of tender feelings. He feels and implores poets to pay this attention to details for everything the only about the feelings.”

George Szirtes of United Kingdom said during his Inaugural Address that, “A poet is a scientist of emotions and he feels that these emotions should be preserved and woven into poetry so that many more can savor it and enlighten their thoughts and lives.

Poetry is compared with the creator of the universe since a poem creates a scene which is as vivid, truthful and soul enriching as the one by the creator or god himself.”

The Inaugural Session will be followed by First Session at 2:00PM to 3:30PM, which will be chaired by Keki N Daruwalla (India) and readings by Marra PL. Lanot (Philippines), Milosav Topinka (Czech Republic), Vanita (India). The Second Session at 4:00PM to 5:30PM to be chaired by Pia Tafdrup (Denmark) and readings by Thangjam Ibopishak Singh (India), Philip Nikolayev (USA), Tamilanban (India). The evening will be dedicated to a Odissi Dance Performance by Shweta Mukti on theme “Feminine Glory of Nirvana by Kavita Dwivedi”.

Les Wicks the Australian Poet,  speak of displacement and modern turmoil, all the time using metaphors from his native sensibilities. Modern poetry is at once personal and also universal- using local idioms to define a new global language of poetic communication.

Nikola Madzirov Coming from the Balkans, he  understands the pain that was and exile bring to humanity. It is rich resonant cove, resisting his poems in his won Macedonian tongue was mesmeric. Using the rope of everyday world and nature, he is able to penetrate into the psyche of the modern man.

Najwan Darwish The Palestinian poet communicates the confusion of the homeless, identity- less man- and he develops this theme to embrace all people who have suffered exile, persecution and humiliation-  and they are one in their suffering as humans.

Green Guide Training Program in Mumbai Kicks Off

Report by Santanu Ganguly: For all those nature-lovers who want to make a difference, this yearly workshop teaches you all you need to know about conservation education. Every year we train bunch of nature enthusiasts to work with us. Till now more than 300 individuals have been trained of which more than 50 committed Green Guides are currently working with us for whom, the Centre is a second home. The 4 day over-night module includes broad subjects like natural history, environment education and nature conservation. We use hands-on training and participatory learning approaches followed by a job handling phase known as “Shadowing Phase”. The participants learn about nature walks, slide shows, project works, education material development, communication skills, programme planning, budgetary preparation, crisis management and much more. Participants are enrolled on payroll of green guides on successful completion of ‘Shadowing Phase’.

Note: The United Nations Convention for Biological Diversity has developed 20 global biodiversity targets for year 2020, also known as Aichi Targets. DU 'Antardhvani 2014' Cultural Fest From Feb. 14

EFT Report, New Delhi: The University of Delhi is all set to host its annual Antardhvani Cultural Festival 2014 from February 14-16, 2014.

Antardhvani Cultural Festival was conceptualized and started in 2011 and has become the showpiece event of India’s highest rated university. In the brief duration of two years it has emerged as the medium for profiling the university’s cultural, sports and academic achievements. Workshops for Children at Kala Ghoda Arts Festival on Feb. 2

Report by Santanu Ganguly:  The Asia Society of India has organised workshops for children at the Mumbai's prestigious Kala Ghoda Arts Festival 2014 on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2013.

In The Mighty Tale of Hanuman, the beloved monkey deity Hanuman narrates the legendary story of the Ramayana, the epic struggle between good and evil, in which Ram undertakes a perilous journey to rescue his beloved wife Sita, who has been kidnapped by the Demon King Ravana. The book is illustrated with magnificent original 18^th century paintings from the collection of the Mehrangarh Museum Trust. All profits from book sales support the Veerni Project to empower girls in Rajasthan. 

This workshop will be conducted by Saker Mistri and Mamta Dalal Mangaldas, also authors of the children's book The Kidnapping of Amir Hamza.

World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2014 Kicks Off

EFT Report, Davos: A variety of technological, social, economic and political forces are transforming our lives, communities and institutions.
