US to host largest South Asian film festival from Oct. 15

EFT Report, New York: The 10-day 10th Seattle South Asian Film Festival (SSAFF) will kickstart on October 15 and will be held in five US cities, a media report said on Wednesday.

The SSAFF, the largest South Asian Film Festival in the US presented by non-profit, community-based organisation Tasveer, will screen films from South Asian countries like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh. The authorities posted the schedule of the festival on its official website on Wednesday.

"These films touch on themes of upholding cultural identity and love in the face of extreme challenges," Redmond Reporter quoted Rita Meher, artistic director of the festival, as saying.

The festival includes 32 feature films and 27 shorts representing nine countries.

The distinctive feature of this year's festival is that it will be celebrated in Redmond for the first time. Other cities -- Seattle, Bothell, Bellevue and Renton -- will also host the festival.

"Social issues like these are on the minds of South Asians everywhere, even here in Redmond. We came to Redmond because we want to be closer to our community," Meher said.

"I live in Sammamish, work in Redmond, in a cultural office space generously donated by Redmond. By adding Redmond as our new city, Tasveer can help promote it as a new cultural hub," Meher, who is also the executive director of Tasveer, added.

Sponsor of the festival in Redmond, Tasveer's mission is to cultivate the artistic work of South Asians through films, forums, visual art and performances that engage and empower the community.

"One in 10 people in Redmond is of Indian descent, said Jessica Rubenacker, the Arts Season grant programme coordinator.

"Supporting organisations like Tasveer not only serves this community but bringing projects like the Seattle South Asian Film Festival to Redmond helps to build bridges across cultural communities. It has been a great partnership," she added.

The Arts Season, Redmond is a grant programme that administers the city's arts events with the goal of ensuring that residents have access to a robust season of high quality arts and cultural programmes all year long.

'Game of Thrones' to be turned into a movie

EFT Report, Los Angeles: US network HBO will make a big screen adaptation of the popular show "Game of Thrones" when the fantasy drama ends its run on TV, says its creator George R.R. Martin.

"Game Of Thrones", which is mainly filmed in Belfast, won several Emmys this year. Speaking at the HBO afterparty, author Martin said he will not be involved in the film and that show writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will be in charge, reports dailystar.co.uk.

Martin, who is currently writing the final two "Game Of Thrones" books, said: “There will be a movie but I will not be involved.

“I have too much to do. That is something HBO and the DB and David are dealing with. I have two more books to finish and I still have so much to do. The pressure is on. I am such a slow writer and the fans get upset that I don’t write faster.”

A production source said the film may go back in time.

The source said: “With the 'Game Of Thrones' universe, there is much rich material and no constraints on when that story will take place. They are looking at dipping back in time during certain periods of the series, which could be examined as a one off plot.

"That means that some of the big characters who fans have seen die on screen could be resurrected such as Robb Stark, Catelyn Stark, Oberyn Martell The Red Viper - and Ned Stark."

Despite the film plans, Benioff ruled out extending the TV series to 10 seasons.

He said: “No way in hell because we know what the end is and we’re rapidly approaching it.”

7:00 pm|DOC FILM|The Human Factor (English/2012/76 mins) Dir. Rudradeep Bhattacharjee Songs have been an integral part of Indian films. The singers, the music directors, the lyricists - they have all been celebrated for their work and many have attained legendary status. But who were those unseen - and unedited - musicians who made up the orchestras that played on those songs and the background scores? The Human Factor tells the fascinating story of the Lords, a Parsi family of musicians who collectively worked for over 60 years in Mumbai’s film orchestras. But the story of the Lords is not theirs alone. It also remains a crucial but obscure chapter in the history of Indian cinema. In the centenary year of Indian cinema, this documentary - replete with rare archival material - provides viewers with a subaltern history of Bollywood. Featured at various film festivals including the New York Indian Film Festival, 2013 & Indisches Film Festival, Stuttgart, 2013 among others. Collab: FD Zone
