Families spend their day making bright rangolis outside their houses and a gudhi (compromising of green or yellow cloth tied to the tip of a long bamboo over which sugar crystals, neem leaves, a twig of mango leaves and a garland of red flowers is tied. A silver or copper pot is placed in the inverted position over it) which they stick out of their window.

According to the Hindu belief, one of the many significances of the gudhi is its symbolism as Lord Bramha's flag, who is believed to have created the world on this auspicious day. Gudhi is also believed to ward off evil, invite prosperity and good luck into the house.

The traditional outfit for Gudhi Padwa is the nauvari sari (traditional Maharashtrian sari) for women and kurta pajama for men.

For all those with a sweet tooth, Gudhi Padwa has much to offer! A paste of Neem leaves and gur (jaggery) is traditionally eaten first, as it is representative of the bitter and sweet things in life.

Aam Panna (tangy drink made from raw mangoes), puran poli (sweet-stuffed bread) and shrikhand (saffron flavoured sweet yogurt) are some of the sweets worth trying this season.
