An Evening of Sufi Music With 'Nizami Bandhu'
The evening was organized towards DIVINE’s campaign – “STOP AIDS- PROTECT THE INNOCENT.” Under this campaign, a series of Rallies, Nukkad Nataks etc have been planned by Divine as part of its fight against AIDS. Besides AIDS awareness, the organization is working to spread awareness among the masses about the importance of education, the cancer of child labor, betterment for the health and social rights of affected children.

The evening commenced with 'Maula Ke Kaul', which according to Sufiana tradition is important to start with. These Sufi legends mesmerised all with their powerful voices and magic of qawali. During their performance Chand Nizami also presented some soulful poetry and received a huge applause from the audience. The lines 'Mere Maula Ka Jispe Karam Ho Jaye Wo Satyam Shivam Sundaram Ho Jaye..' & 'Ha Se Hindu Ban Gaye, Ma se Muslim Bane aur Jab Ha or Ma Mile to 'HUM' ban gaye..' touched the people's hearts and they applauded the same.

The evening saw the soulful performance of Sufi music composed in Urdu, Farsi & Arabi language these included; 'Saanson Ki Khushboo..', 'Khwaja Mere Khwaja..', 'Faya Kun..'amongst few others. They ended the program with popular song 'Dama Dam Mast Kalandar..', in which the attraction was presentation of 'Dhamaal' by one of the accompanied musicians Nazim Nizami, he presented a vast variation on tabla and left the audience craving for more.

During the program Jai Prakash Agarwal (Sr. Leader), Vipin Sharma (MLA), Md. Adib (MP, Rajya Sabha, UP), Bhuvaneshwar Kaliya, Kamal Kishore along with Divine Social Welfare Society's Yash Sharma, Uttam Singh and Puneet were present. Manish Dubey was the compere for the evening.

Jai Prakash Agarwal praised the efforts of NGO Divine and said, though we see many musical programs and others to support the cause but here the theme is strong, AIDS is one of the biggest health issues today and to create awareness about it is very important. I wish them and artists all the best.

Speaking about the program, Yash Sharma said Today Nizami Bandhu are one of the top-most artists having performed at both national and international level. Since music is a very important part of life, we chose to organise an evening of Sufi Music with them to create awareness about AIDS.

Nizami Bandhu were extremely pleased with the program, the leader of the group Chand Nizami said, The word Qawwali comes from the Arabic word Qual, meaning “poems that are full of praises to God.” “We get a very satisfying feeling in our hearts and souls when we invoke God and Sufi saints by singing. There’s a big difference between performing on the stage and performing inside a sacred shrine,” Nizami said. “When your guru or saint is in front of you, and you’re singing face-to-face with God, it’s an entirely different atmosphere.”

Transomatic Dialogue Using Zen Tarot Cards
Transomatic dialogue is a guided deep relaxation process, which helps you to remember moments in childhood when you became separated from your original self. Stress, tensions, pain, emotional and existential issues are signs, which show us that we are going against the harmony of existence. The guided trances help to reconnect with our body and our inner being, traveling through our emotions, senses, creativity and energy.

Every dis-ease carries a specific life-message from the unconscious mind. Transomatic Dialogue using Tarot Cards to deepen your experience, is a unique method that enables the body to speak, using your inner voice, wisdom and intuition. In this way the message is delivered directly by your higher self.

‘Percussion From Persia’ a Workshop by Fakhroddin Ghaffari

Report by Santanu Ganguly, New Delhi: “Percussion from Persia,” a workshop by Fakhroddin Ghaffari will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at the Attic, Regal Cinema building in New Delhi at 6.30 pm.

‘Percussion From Persia’ a Workshop by Fakhroddin Ghaffari
‘Percussion From Persia’ Workshop by Fakhroddin Ghaffari
In the 16th century the music of North India was heavily influenced by Islamic influences. From this emerged the Hindustani style which separated from the Carnatic style. This new style may be thought of as a mixture of traditional Indian musical concepts and Persian performance practice. This new musical synthesis led to new the forms of qawwali and khayal.

Fakhroddin Ghaffari will start the workshop with an introduction to Persian music especially the Tombak drum. This is the classical Persian percussion instrument in Persian music very much like the tabla. He will relate how the Tombak has become one of the most difficult percussion instruments in the world and will talk about the school of Tombak playing where he comes from.

He will then introduce the Daf, a large Persian frame drum used in popular and classical music. It’s frame is usually made of hardwood with many metal ringlets attached, and a membrane of goatskin. It is mostly used in the Middle East, Kurdistan, Iran, Armenia, Pakistan, Turkey, Tajikistan and Azerbaijan, and usually accompanies singers and players of the tambura and other Middle Eastern instruments.

He will then talk about the khanqaah tradition – a khanqaah is a building designed specifically for gatherings of a Sufi brotherhood, or tariqa, and is a place for spiritual retreat and character reformation. In the past they often served as hospices for Sufi travelers (salik) and Islamic students (talib). Khanqahs are very often found adjoined to dargahs (shrines of Sufi saints), mosques and madrasas (Islamic schools). They are found throughout the Persian-influenced Islamic world, especially Iran, Central Asia and South Asia.

Fakhroddin Ghaffari's has shared the stage with such famous artists as Abida Parveen and Hansraj Hans. His performances have won him critical acclaim across the country.

Born in the Kurdistan region of Iran, he began studying Tombak and later the Daf. He moved to India in 2002, after working with several Persian classical ensembles in Iran. He completed his M.Phil degree in Hindustani Classical Music.

He founded a Persian Sufi and classical music ensemble (the Baran Music Ensemble), with whom he has participated in major festivals in India. In 2009, he merged his ensemble with Pt. Shubhendra Rao’s East Marries West ensemble and formed the Vessal Ensemble.

He teaches percussion at The Lancers International School. He has conducted workshops on music therapy and percussion as well as seminars in Iran on Indian music theory and the Raaga-Taal system . He has also written many articles and translated several books on Indian music from English to Farsi.
