National Sports Awards 2013 Complete List

EFT Bureau, New Delhi: President of India Mr. Pranab Mukherjee conferred the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Dronacharya Awards, Arjuna Awards, Dhyan Chand Awards, Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy and Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar at a specially organized function at Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi on Aug. 31, 2013.

National Sports Awards are given every year to recognize and reward excellence in sports. Apart from a medal and a citation, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awardee received a cash prize of Rs 7.5 lakh. Arjuna, Dronacharya and Dhyan Chand Awardees received statuettes, citations and cash prize of Rs.5 lakh each. Recipients of Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar were given Trophies.

India to Celebrate National Sports Day on Aug. 29

EFT Report, New Delhi: Various sporting events such as walkathon and football tournaments will be held across India for the first time as part of the National Sports Day celebration on August 29, 2013 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Indian hockey legend Dhyan Chand, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) said.

FICCI has planned the sports activities in multiple cities throughout India on August 29, with the help of important organizations like Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports Authority of India, All India Council of Physical Education, Association of Indian Universities and Asian Football Development Project.

“Plan for the National Sports day celebration was conceived last year. We hope that this would play a pivotal role in overall development and growth of the nation,” said Sanjiv Paul, Chairman of FICCI sports committee.

The government has also approved the program to spread sports to every corner of the country by creating a nation-wide awareness about the fruitful side of sports.

“We need to build a sports culture in the country. We do not take sports as seriously as the other sporting nation do. Our sports persons do not get the respect that they deserve,” Onkar Kedia, Joint secretary, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports said.

“This is probably due to the fact that opportunities to excel in international event is limited because of lack of supportive infrastructure and scientific assistant,” he added.

Mr. Kedia also said that from next year onwards state governments, NGOs and the academic institutions will be involved to create awareness of National Sports day.

FIFA, which sees India as the next big stage for football, has also welcomed this program.

“I congratulate everyone for coming up with an idea such as this to celebrate the National Sports Day. Asian Football Development Project (AFDP) will work extensively in India for the development of football and sports overall. Also we will initiate football for a social change program in India,” Prince Ali Bin Hussein, Vice-President, Asia, FIFA, said.

Airtel Rising Stars 2013 to Kick off in Delhi on Aug. 17

Report by Santanu Ganguly, New Delhi: The Airtel Rising Stars 2013 season, India’s largest Under-16 soccer talent hunt, will kick off in Delhi on August 17, with 80 of the city’s leading soccer playing schools vying for the honor of lifting the Airtel Cup, the symbol of supremacy in the city. Besides Delhi, the Airtel Rising Stars talent hunt will be held in six other cities, namely Mumbai, Kolkata, Goa, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Guwahati and will involve around 450 schools in total.

The opening matches of the tournament will be played at the Ganga International School Ground and will feature G.I.S. versus Richmond Public School, followed by Venkateshwar, Rohini versus St. Margret.

The tournament will also be the platform to pick the best three players, who will go on to represent Delhi in the final selection trials to be held in Goa. The best goalkeeper from each city will also be picked and put through their paces, following which two will be shortlisted for the final selection trials, which will be held in Goa.

Besides players from the top soccer playing schools, individual players also stand a chance of being picked for the final selection trials. Those aspiring of the opportunity can upload videos of their soccer playing skills and the top 50 videos from each city will be shortlisted for a live audition. From these, the most talented player will get an opportunity to be a part of the final selection trials.

The 30 players in the final selection trials will train for five days under coaches of the Manchester United Soccer Schools (MUSS) in Goa and will be tested on all parameters (including physical attributes, individual skills, match situations and their performances in actual matches) before 11 of the best players are chosen to travel to Manchester for a week and train alongside the Manchester United - Under 21 team.

30th Annual Day Celebration of AYJNIHH on Aug. 9

Report by Santanu Ganguly: Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped (AYJNIHH), Mumbai is an autonomous institute working under the Department of Disability Affairs, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India. The Institute established in 1983, is celebrating its 30th Annual Day on 9th August 2013.

The institute has four regional centers at Kolkata, New Delhi, Secunderabad and Janla. It also has two Composite Rehabilitation Centers at Bhopal and Ahmedabad. Manpower development, Research, Clinical activities, Information & Documentation, Outreach & Extension services and Material development are the main objectives of the Institute.

Manpower development - Manpower development is one of the major activities of the Institute. Considering the need for trained professionals in the area, the Institute has started different training programs in Speech & Hearing and Special Education affiliated to local universities and recognized by Rehabilitation Council of India. Programs at the Diploma, Degree and Post-Graduate & Doctoral level are conducted at Mumbai and its regional centers. Along with these long- term courses the Institute continuously provides short – term training to the different target groups and allied professionals in the field of rehabilitation of the disabled. The Indian Sign Language Cell (ISLC) of the Institute runs three courses:– Introductory Level, Intermediate Level and Professional Interpreter Level at AYJNIHH, Mumbai and its regional centers.

Research - Research forms an integral part of the activities of the institute. The research projects of the AYJNIHH are primarily application-oriented and community – based. These are intended to increase and improve the re/habilitation services, and to reach out to a larger number of persons with hearing impairment.

Clinical Activities - The Institute also renders services to person with hearing-impairment both at institute and at the community level. An interdisciplinary team of audiologists, speech language pathologists, special educators, psychologists, social workers, ENT specialists, pediatricians and neurologists maintain a high standard of rehabilitation services. State of art technology is available for early identification and diagnosis of hearing impairment, early intervention, and speech and language rehabilitation.

Outreach & Extension Services – A professional team visits unserved areas to provide diagnostic, intervention and other rehabilitation services. A separate department has been set up at the institute to provide services to the unreached population of the country. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India has allotted 42 districts to the Institute in the states /union territories of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli to conduct camps.

Information and Documentation - The Institute serves as a repository of all information pertaining to the area of disability specially hearing impairment. It maintains a library that is equipped with reading material including books, microfilms, and audio-visual back volumes of journals. The computer center disseminates information about individuals and organizations working for the disabled. The Institute has launched Disability Information Line (Dil), an IVRS based 24 hours telephonic service for persons with disabilities in the states of Maharashtra, Goa, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Odisha, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Assam, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Sikkim, Kerala, and Punjab telecom circles.

Material Development - Creating awareness is one of the main objectives of the institute. In this regard the Institute has developed material in various forms for awareness and training purposes.

Achievements - In this span of time, many milestones have been crossed and several National and International Awards won. AYJNIHH continues its pursuit of excellence in as it strives to improve the quality of life of persons with hearing impairment.

The Gujar Mal Modi Innovative Science and Technology Award is among the highest cash awards in the country in the field of Science and Technology. The award was instituted in 1988 in the memory of one of the great industrialists of India, late Rai Bahadur Gujar Mal Modi. It is given each year to a person who has demonstrated the qualities of excellence and innovation through outstanding research and providing leadership in the development and promotion of Science and Technology in India.

Dr. Vinod Prakash Sharma, a scientist of international repute, born on 6th April 1938 in Bulandshahr district, Uttar Pradesh, had his early education in UP and did his M.Sc. in 1960; D.Phil. in 1964; and D.Sc. in 1979 all from Allahabad University. He was Post Doctoral Research Associate, University of Notre Dame and Purdue University, USA (1965-1968); Pool Officer, Forest Research Institute, Dehradun (1969-1970); Senior Scientist WHO/ICMR Unit on Genetic Control of Mosquitoes, New Delhi (1970-1975). Dr Sharma was Deputy Director Vector Control Research Centre/Malaria Research Centre (1975-1982). He was appointed Director, Malaria Research Centre now National Institute of Malaria Research (NIMR), and as its Founder Director (1982-1998) he laid the foundation of basic and applied research for prevention and control of malaria in the country. He superannuated in 1998 as the Additional Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research.

Dr. Sharma is a fellow of all the three science academies i.e. Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi (INSA); Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS), Bangalore; National Academy of Sciences, India (FNASc), National Academy of Medical Sciences (FAMS), Third World Academy of Sciences (FTWAS), and Fellow of several other learned societies. He is considered an authority on Malaria & Vector Biology. He has 40 years of research and field experience, and has published about 400 scientific papers with high impact factor, and several books. Under his leadership NIMR had earned international reputation of excellence in malaria research and control, and established linkages with the leading national and international laboratories. His research papers have high citation index. He has translated some of his scientific contributions in two books in Hindi on “Malaria” and “Dengue and Chikengunya”.

Dr. Sharma conceptualized a novel bioenvironmental malaria control strategy as an alternative to spraying chemicals and successfully demonstrated malaria control in various eco-epidemiological settings. Dr Sharma’s work has become legendry. As a result of his indefatigable efforts today we have technologies to fight malaria which are environmentally safe, cost effective, produce sustainable impact on the society and are free from ecological hazards that are often associated with DDT and other insecticides.
He was invited to work on various WHO panels since 1980s. He was Chair, WHO/UNEP/FAO Panel of Experts on Environmental Management (PEEM) for Vector Control (two 5 yr terms). WHO invited him to write/review Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) proposals for South East Asia Regional countries i.e., Indonesia, Timor Leste, Myanmar, Bhutan, Bangladesh, India; and for Sierra Leone by one NGO. He was the principal architect for writing World Bank and other projects for the Indian Programme in malaria control. He chaired review committees of the NMEP, Nepal, Bhutan, Thailand, and is involved in the evaluation of the countries capabilities to proceed towards malaria elimination. He was actively associated with developing malaria control strategies which have converged to become important component of the WHO’s Malaria Elimination strategy. He had been WHO Temporary Adviser for a number of meetings in Geneva and New Delhi. He represented India on the Scientific Committee on the Problems of the Environment, Paris (SCOPE) for nearly 20 years and later elected as the executive member of the SCOPE. In that capacity he coordinated the “Health and Environment” cluster of the SCOPE.

He was President, The National Academy of Sciences, India, (1999-2000); Indian Society for Parasitology (1993-1997); National Academy of Vectors and Vector Borne Diseases (1979-2008), Chief Editor, Indian Journal of Malariology, and currently Chief Editor; Journal of Parasitic Diseases of the Indian Society for Parasitology and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, India, Section B Biological Sciences. He was Council Member of the International Congress of Entomology, U.K. (2 terms), Member WHO Expert Committee on Malaria, Geneva (3 terms).

He is the recipient of several National and international awards/honours. Some of these are: the Distinguished Parasitologist by World Parasitologist Federation 2010; Darling Foundation Prize, World Health Organization, Geneva 1999; Padam Shree 1992; Inventions award 1971; Chancellor's best student Bronze Medal, Agra University 1958; Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) MOT Iyengar Award 1990 and B.R. Ambedkar Centenary Award 2000; Om Prakash Bhasin Award 1985; Ranbaxy Award 1990; M.L. Gupta Trust Award 1989. Federation of Indian Chambers Commerce and Industry (FICCI) Cash Award 1998. Vasvik Award 2001; Green Scientist Award 2001; Dr. R.V. Rajam Oration Award 1987; Best Scientist Award 1995; Dr. U.S. Srivastava Memorial Lecture Award 2002; G.P. Chatterjee Memorial Award of Indian Science Congress Association 2003-2004; B.N. Singh Oration Award Gold Medal 1990; Life Long Contributions in Public Health ISMOCD Oration Award 2001; Life Time Achievement award 2005; and many other awards.

He was Meghnad Saha Distinguished Fellow (2005-2010), and presently he is NASI Distinguished Professor and ICMR Chair in Public Health Research (2010-2015) at the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi. His contributions in the National Academy of Sciences have culminated into successful programmes with significant impact on society. He is spearheading the “Safe Water” campaign of the National Academy of Sciences, India launched during the Year of Science. His team is currently developing action oriented plan of “Safe Water for all” in Bundelkhand Region. His work on popularization of science, creating awareness and science education programmes of NASI are widely appreciated including in very remote areas. For almost four decades Dr. V.P. Sharma has dedicated himself towards research, promotion and application of science and technology leaving an everlasting effect.

And the night it decides to reveal itself, delicately framing the sky? Yes, in India, that night we call Chaand Raat, the night of the crescent moon. And thus begins the festival of Eid.

After an overwhelming response to last month's Sufi night, we have invited Damini on this mubarak occasion, to lead us, once again, into the realm of the Sufis. We do the Ed milap, with a sufiyana andaaz. Feeling the essence of friendliness of celebration. She will take us through the stories, zikr and dances of the sufis.

The festivities will take place in natural ambiance, supported by candlelight.

After the Jashn, our cooks will be greeting you with a mouth watering feast including the Pride of Zorba, Shahenshah-e-Saiwayyan!
