Delhi Horse Show 2013 Gallops to Its 28th Edition

Report by Santanu Ganguly, New Delhi: It’s that time of the year when the India’s premier and all-encompassing equestrian event captures the interest of all riders aged 4 to 54. Held at the Nickelson ranges of Delhi Cantt every year, The Delhi Horse Show first began in the Pre-Independence era, and after a long period where it discontinued, the annual equestrian competition has been running successfully for 28 years now.

This is the only equestrian show in India that has events ranging from Dressage to standard and variant forms of Show Jumping, Puissance, and fun gymkhana event for adults and children. Participants range from 3-year old to some of the country’s top riders, and this year will witness 1000 horses and 2000 competitors vie for top honors.

The final rounds as well as some of the most challenging competitions on the horse will be held on the finale weekend – 5th to 7th April 2013. DHS starts in the morning at 6:30 am with competitions lined up for the morning. And the second session begins at 4:30 pm till sunset.

Modeled on the lines of the Dublin Horse Show, which brings all of Ireland to Dublin for a fortnight of equestrian phenomena, the Delhi Horse Show has participants from across the country, including Karnataka, Punjab and North-East, and competitors include:

Army riders (President’s Bodyguard, 61st Cavalry, ASC, RVC, Northern Command, Eastern Command, IMA, NDA, Assam Rifles), Police Forces (Punjab Police, BSF, Delhi Police, MP Police, ITBP, Gujarat Police, Karnataka Police), Schools and colleges (Rashtriya Indian Military College- Dehradun, Mayo College-Ajmer, Punjab Public School-Nabha, Kirpal Sagar Academy-Rahon, Delhi Public School-Panipat, Amity Riding Academy, Manav Kendra Gyan Mandir School), Civilian Riding Clubs (Shivalik Riding & Pony Club-Chandimandir, Tollygung Club-Kolkatta, Children Riding Club, Woodstock Riding Club) and Prominent Public and Civilian participation.

The Delhi Horse Show has been in existence since the early part of 20th century. In the days of Raj, it was considered one of the main events in the Indian social calendar and took place on the grounds of the prestigious Red Fort. After Independence, the tradition continued and it remained India’s premier Horse Show but was discontinued in 1979 with the unavailability of the Red Fort grounds. The Army Polo & Riding Club renewed the country’s love for equestrian 27 years ago, and with the Chief of the Army Staff as its President, has continuously been organizing the Show, now in its 28th edition
