EFT Report, Allianz-Arena: Arsene Wenger’s men did themselves proud by beating Bundesliga leader Bayern Munich 2-0 at their own backyard Allianz-Arena in the return tie of Champions League Round of 16 played on March 14 but bowed out of the competition on away goals following a 3-3 draw on aggregate. This is the third consecutive year Arsenal FC have been knocked-out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage.

Going into this match dubbed
‘Mission Impossible’, Arsenal Frenchman striker Olivier Giroud stunned the 68,000 sell-out Munich’s Allianz Arena crowd by scoring in the 3rd minute to give Gunners’ hope of pulling off a miracle. Jupp Heynckes’s Bayern dominated the match with accurate ball possession but for a change.... Arsenal’s defense led by Mertesacker stood firm and held-off all German’s advance. Koscielny's late 84th-minute header equaled the scores on aggregate 3-3 but the desperately needed goal to complete the remarkable Arsenal’s comeback never saw the light. In all fairness (despite me being a die-hard Gunners’ fan) Bayern Munich deserved to be in the last 8 for their 3-1 scintillating winning performance at Emirates in the first leg. With Arsenal FC now out the Champions League, this is the first time in 17 years of Champions League history no English clubs will be featuring in the Champions League quarter-finals.
In another Champions League match played at Estadio La Rosaleda, La Liga side Malaga beat Portuguese side FC Porto 2-0 (aggregate 2-1) to advance into the quarters. Isco and former Manchester City striker Roque Santa Cruz scored for the Spanish side.
