JLF 2013: An Evening With Sharmila Tagore

By Santanu Ganguly, Jaipur: Sharmila Tagore received the news of being awarded the Padma Bhushan shortly before the session began. Soon the news was all over and the packed venue welcomed and cheered for the iconic ‘Kashmir ki Kali’, as she is fondly known. The evergreen actress humbly acknowledged the applause and hence began an amazing evening with Sharmila Tagore. Nasreen Munni Kabir set the ball rolling by asking the veteran about her entry into films and her equation with the legendary Satyajit Ray. Sharmila quite descriptively remembered the 13 year old girl she was when she stepped into the profession.

Satyajit Ray’s “Apur Sansar” and “Devi” were the Bengali movies that ushered her into the acting career and how she has evolved as an actor since then. Talking about Manik Da (Satyajit Ray) she said, “He found me more than I found him”.

In Bollywood, the movies “Mausam” and “Safar” are the ones that she treasures most for the challenging roles she portrayed in them. Her characters did not succumb to victimhood, unlike the ‘contemporary actress’ role of the day. This was followed by a discussion on women empowerment and the prevalent patriarchy in the society. Unfortunately “women are considered the epitome and cause for everything” and this attitude needs to be changed. She talked about the simultaneous changes in cinema with the changing times and her experience as a member of the censor board.
