Giulio Cesare-George Frideric Handel Opera at NCPA

EFT Report, Mumbai: In a continuing bid to get the best international programming to the NCPA, a tie-up with New York’s prestigious Metropolitan Opera brings high-quality screenings of live opera playing at the MET. It’s the next best thing to being there.

The opera that conquered London in Handel’s time comes to the Met in David McVicar’s lively production. The dynamic production incorporates elements of Baroque theatre and 19th century British Imperialism to illuminate opera’s themes of love, war and empire building.

The action is based on the historical events of the Roman civil war of 48-47 B.C. Julius Caesar has defeated his rival Pompey and pursued him to Alexandria, capital of Egypt. The kingdom is ruled jointly by Cleopatra and her younger brother Ptolemy, the last of the dynasty established in Egypt after its conquest by Alexander the Great.

Cleopatra uses all her considerable wiles to persuade Caesar to join her in an alliance against her brutish brother Ptolemy, with whom she rules the country. Plots and counter-plots ensue before Caesar and Cleopatra emerge finally triumphant in both love and war.
