EFT Bureau, Mumbai: Marking the 160th anniversary of the Indian Railways, the Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal flagged off the local train service between Dahanu and Churchgate on April 16, 2013. During his address, Mr. Bansal said the new train services between Dahanu and Churchgate (124 kms) will go a long way in fulfilling the needs of the people in the area and also to a large extent help improve the economic conditions of tribals in the region. He said that out of 23 million railway commuters, 53 per cent came from suburban section. Of this, Mumbai suburban section accounts for nearly 61 per cent.
There will be 20 EMU services to and from Dahanu daily. So far, EMU services were available on the Western Railway from Churchgate, up to Virar. Mainline Electrical Multiple Unit (MEMU) trains operated between Virar and Dahanu, and as such people living in Palghar, Boisar and Vaitarna had to change trains in Virar to commute to Mumbai. With today’s extension, Dahanu gets directly connected with Borivali, Dadar and Churchgate.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Guardian Minister of Thane, Ganesh Naik were also present at the function, which was held at Dahanu station.
