EFT Report, London: The cry for Arsene Wenger’s head will grow much louder now after the dismal performance put in by his men in their 3-1 defeat to German giants Bayern Munich in the first leg of Champions League Round of 16 played at the Emirates stadium on Feb 20 leaving the Gunners on the brink of another Champions League exit.
The strong Bayern Munich team were up 2 goals to nothing at the Emirates by the 20 minute after a stunning strike from midfielder Toni Kroos and a scrappy goal from Thomas Muller. Lukas Podolski pulled one back for the Gunners in the 55th minute after a mistake by Munich keeper Manuel Neuer heading the ball into an unguarded net against his former club but Bayern’s top scorer of the season Croatian international Mario Mandzukic put the match beyond Arsenal’s reach in the 77th minute. Arsenal now has a ‘Mount Everest’ to climb if they want to progress into the next round, they have to overturn a two-goal deficit when they travel to Allianz Arena on March 13 for the return tie. But with Bayern enjoying three away goals to their name it seems very highly unlikely.
In another Champions League match played, Portuguese club FC Porto defeated Spanish side Malaga 1-0 at Estadio Do Dragao with Joao Moutinho scoring the lone goal of the match.
