55th National Exhibition of Art in Delhi From March 22-April 10

Report by Santanu Ganguly: Lalit Kala Akademi (National Academy of Art) Ministry of Culture, Government of India is organizing its annual National Exhibition of Art from 22nd March, 2014 – 10th April, 2014 at Rabindra Bhawan, Lalit Kala Akademi at 35, Ferozshah Road. The inauguration of the exhibition and award function will be held at FICCI auditorium. The exhibition will be attended by eminent artists and scholars from all over the country. 
The Lalit Kala Akademi, National Academy of Art, New Delhi was set up by the Government of India as an autonomous body on 5th August, 1954. Searching for a fresh cultural identity and nationhood, the Indian Government’s commitment to support the arts on a massive scale was made prominent with the establishment of major cultural organizations. These national organizations were established with a strong focus on artistic excellence. The Lalit Kala Akademi, one among such national organizations, emerged as the principal establishment of culture that focuses its activities in the field of Visual Arts in various forms.
Apart from its vast collection of artworks it also sustains a library, archives, conservation laboratory organizes art exhibition in India and foreign countries under the assegais of Cultural exchange.and publishes books and journals of intellectual merit pertaining to visual arts.
The Headquarters of the Akademi is housed at Rabindra Bhavan Complex at Delhi.  It has Regional Centres at Chennai, Lucknow, Kolkata, Bhubaneshwar, Shimla and Garhi in Delhi.  It has a camp office at Shillong also.
National Exhibition of Art: The National Exhibition of Art is a major annual program of the Lalit Kala Akademi. The Akademi has been organizing this prestigious event at various venues in the country to encourage, support and build, a meaningful involvement with artists and art lovers beyond the country’s mega-cities. The Akademi has mounted shows at Hyderabad, Guwahati, Kochi, Bhopal, Chandigarh and Goa. Since 1955, the Akademi has organized 54 National Exhibitions of Art and has presented the National Award to 565 artists and Honourable Mentions to 87 artists.
The 55th National Exhibition comprises of 168 artworks selected from a competitive 6583 entry of works, by 2601 artists, 9 artists in the invited section and four films produced by Lalit Kala Akademi. The award carries Prize Money of Rs 1 Lakh, Plaque and a Certificate, each.
The works were chosen by a Screening Committee consisting of Shri Sachida Nagdev, Dr. Asharfi S. Bhagat, Shri Ajit Kumar Dubey, Shri Satish Sharma, Shri Aditya Arya , H. A. Anil Kumar. A second-tier Jury for choosing the ten National Awardees from this selection has been done by Shri V. Ramesh, Shri Ajay Kumar, Shri Deepak Kanal. Shri Deepak Banerjee, Smt. Shobha Broota, Shri Satya Paul, Shri Suresh Jayaram and Shri Shrenik Jain.
The works in the current exhibition merit attention on account of their challenging content, epitomizing creative features, individual commitment, discriminating quality of methods, materials used and more, so that the exhibition becomes a true representation of the dimensions of contemporary art thinking nationally.
