EFT Report by Maningbiliu Pamai, Kohima: Winter is here and if you are wondering what to explore this holiday, the famous Nagaland Hornbill festival, “Festival of Festivals” is right around the corner. Visiting Kohima, the capital of the 16th state of India, Nagaland during the festival will prove your holiday worthwhile. The seven-day festival celebrated from 1-7 of December every year is all set to take place even this year. The good news is that this year’s festival will continue till the 10th of December owing to the state’s 50th year of statehood.
If you have made up your mind, come prepared for the entire 10-day celebration because everyday’s show will vary with loads of excitements, and you sure will not regret it. The cultural institution display and Naga folk attires, songs, dances, sports, traditional cuisine etc. etc. at the Heritage village will amuse you immensely. This is not all, the flagging off of the World War II Vintage Rally will keep you quite occupied. The Night Bazaar that happens only in this time of the year in Kohima will simply engross you and the ever popular Miss Nagaland Contest is also all set to happen again. Beauty, brain and style? It’s on you to decide whether or not to be a spectator and indulge yourself the show. Attention music lovers, Nagaland cannot leave the always-talk-about International Rock contest even in this festival. The Hornbill International Rock Contest (HIRC) 2013 will witness 27 bands contesting this year. Over 121 applications (for the Rock Contest) from outside states and abroad have been received. Moving on.... if you love reading, you might want to attend the 2-day Literature Festival in Heritage village. Nagaland is blessed with diverse and rare species of flowers. The state government wants to show off the gift by organising Flower show. You might want to check out the flowers found in Nagaland as well.
If the above mentioned events have already excited you, be ready to get more excited because there are more activities to indulge in; including the Children Carnival, National Dance Competition, Ethnic Food Competition and many more to put you on suspense. The events will be taking place in different parts of Kohima town and in Kisama, Heritage Village, the main place of the festival. If you have decided to witness the India’s famous “Hornbill Festival”, you need to quickly look for lodging owing to the rush. Almost all the hotels have already been booked well in advance (last year participants will vouched for that). The best to ease your lodging worries is; Try and find a travel agent (preferably local) who can help you. Home-stay is one option you have if you cannot find a hotel room. Identify someone from Nagaland or the tourism department of Nagaland and take their help to find a short-stay home for you.
You can reach Nagaland by plane, rail or road. Dimapur Airport is the nearest airport to reach Kohima. Imphal airport is another option. Dimapur, the commercial hub is the only city in the state that has rail link. By road, you have options available.
