Report by Santanu Ganguly, New Delhi: The Tata group and Literature Live! today announced the 2013 edition of Tata Literature Live! The Mumbai International LitFest. Over 120 writers and thinkers from all over the world are expected to participate in the fourth edition of Mumbai’s premier literary festival.
Tata Literature Live! The Mumbai LitFest will run from November 14 to November 17, 2013 at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA), Mumbai. The festival’s various events will be spread across the NCPA’s Tata, Experimental, Godrej and Little theatres as well as the outdoor Sunken Garden.
Among the writers and thinkers expected this year are Ashley Tellis, Advisor to American Presidents; Sir Nicholas Hytner, Director of the National Theatre of England; Nik Gowing, BBC’s ace presenter; John Coates, neuroscientist from Cambridge University; Mariane Pearl, author of The Mighty Heart; Amitava Kumar and Pankaj Mishra; renowned scientists Jayant Narlikar and Kumar Chitre; Charles Correa; Prof Rohit Deshpande from Harvard; Girish Karnad; Lord Meghnad Desai; Former Chairman of Microsoft India, Ravi Venkatesan; James Astill, Political Editor of The Economist; Sir Mark Tully; bestselling writers Peter James and Vineet Nayar and very many more.
On the centenary of Tagore’s Nobel prize, Prof Sugata Bose from Harvard will launch his new translation of Gitanjali while psychoanalyst Sudhir Kakar’s book, Young Tagore will also be released on the occasion.
Tata Literature Live! The Mumbai LitFest will present all four verticals of literature — fiction, non-fiction, poetry and plays. As always, they will be presented in a manner that appeals to the academic and the lay reader, the bookworm and the occasional browser, the experienced writer and the aspiring author.
This year there will be an exhibition of unique cricket memorabilia by Boria Majumdar to coincide with Sachin Tendulkar’s participation in his career’s 200th and last Test match.
Each day will see engaging panel discussions; book launches and conversations between eminent authors, publishers and literary agents; poetry readings; and engrossing talks and lectures by eminent experts.
Tata Literature Live! The Mumbai LitFest has become immensely popular because it looks at literature in a manner that complements the spirit of Mumbai: lively, energetic, free-wheeling and cosmopolitan.
As a natural corollary, performances related to literature—plays, story-telling with music, performance poetry, dance based on stories and poetry – have become an integral part of the festival. The evening performances promise to be a cutting-edge blend of literature and theatre.
An impressive line-up of acts from both India and abroad will be on offer. Among the performances will be: Martin Kiszko’s More Green Poems for a Blue Planet; Alyque Padamsee’s Arthur Miller: An Actor's Godsend and Antigone: A Stage Reading. Naseeruddin Shah will present extracts from Sadat Hasan Manto’s stories.
Among the plays will be a play for National Children’s Day, Mr. Jeejeeboy and the Birds; the sensation from the Edinburgh Festival, The Price of Everything; the much acclaimed Holocaust love story from Britain, The Tin Ring; The Killing of Dussasana, an incredible blend of Spanish Flamenco and Kathakali; the Mumbai premiere of an acclaimed play from Chennai, How to Skin a Giraffe and a unique show designed around music, literature and Sufi music provided by Ahmedabad’s renowned Deewana group.
Tata Literature Live! The Mumbai LitFest will present for the first time an art and photography exhibition which investigates the relationship between literature and art by inviting artists to create art works inspired by Khushwant Singh’s autobiography, Truth, Love and a Little Malice. On display will be paintings and photographs from illustrious artists like Amit Ambalal, Anjolie Ela Menon, Arpana Caur, Raghu Rai, Clare Arni, Desmond Lazaro, Gigi Scaria and many other eminent artists.
As is the festival’s tradition, the Landmark Literature Live! Lifetime Achievement Award will honour a legend and the Tata First Book Award will recognise promising talent. This year, there will be a First Book Award each for Fiction and Non-Fiction. The longlist and shortlist will be announced shortly and the winner will be announced at the festival.
