Report by Santanu Ganguly, New Delhi: Krrish Group owned Delhi Smashers went all out to bag proven winners and a mix of youth while buying the players’ at the auction to build a formidable outfit for the inaugural Indian Badminton League that will be played at six venues from August 14-31.
The Delhi outfit managed to unite two most successful pairs of men’s doubles and mixed doubles as they build their squad around Commonwealth Games gold medalist and icon player Jwala Gutta and a brigade of young Indian star shuttlers.
The team’s singles challenge will be spearheaded by world number 16 Wing Ki Wong of Hong Kong, who was bought for his base price of $20,000. The team was engaged in aggressive biding to avail the services of upcoming Indian star B Sai Praneeth for $40,000 who was quit a sort after between the other franchise teams. Krrish Delhi Smashers banked on the young talent pool then added the Youth Olympic silver medalist H S Prannoy to complete an impressive singles line-up.
If the singles outfit looks promising, the team definitely boasts of one of the best doubles combinations with the men’s doubles responsibilities to be shouldered by world number two combination of Kien Keat Koo and Boon Heong Tan, both of whom were purchased for $50,000.
Tan, who holds the world record of hitting the fastest smash at 421 km/hr under lab conditions, and Koo are the reigning Asian Games champions and will be the team to beat in the prestigious Indian Badminton League.
Krrish Delhi Smashers have also united India’s best ever mixed doubles combination of Jwala Gutta and V Diju. Jwala and Diju created history by becoming the first mixed doubles combination from the country to win a Grand Prix Gold title and were once ranked eighth in the world. The duo has also represented India in the 2012 Olympic Games.
Speaking about the team composition, Coach Rashid Sidek said, “our strategy was to ensure that we have a very strong doubles outfit and also wanted to bank on the youth power for the singles players. I am extremely happy that we have managed that. The Malaysian combination will not only provide us with the much needed advantage in doubles but their experience of playing team championship will come in handy in the overall strategy.”
