Report by Santanu Ganguly: Noted Author of Fashion Bestseller ‘Powder Room’ launches ‘TFP Library’ at Ludhiana’s first unique concept café cum literary space. Ludhiana’s latest offering—The Frog Prince—has expanded its scope from being a popular café cum pub, with the launch of a book library within the café space. A first of its kind in the city, and pioneering the endeavor for pan-India following, ‘The Frog Prince’ inaugurated its book-lending club with fashion bestseller ‘Powder Room’s author Shefalee Vasudev carrying out a unique reading and interaction.
Shefalee’s book carries an interesting chapter on ‘Ludhiana’s ladies’ and in her first visit to Punjab after the release of the book, the turnout at the café included some of the ladies featured such as Socialite Divya Dhanda and gynecologist Dr Vanie Sarda Thapar, members from Ludhiana’s loved book club that included Charul Chowdhry and Isabella Jain, the restaurant’s owner Pankuri Garg and interior designer Sonia and male representation in the form of creative entrepreneur Anubhav Swami along with hospitality consultant Manu Mohindra.
PANKHURI GARG, OWNER, THE FROG PRINCE, said on the Book Library, “Ludhiana gets overwhelming turnouts when there is a fashion event or a music one… while everyone here is well read, no one likes to admit to that. With the book library, we want to encourage people to borrow, take a book and leave behind a book, and basically… make books and authors a talking point rather than something to be embarrassed about. The idea is to take books out to the public domain and be proud of our reading habits and abilities.”
SONIA MOHINDRA, INTERIOR DESIGNER, THE FROG PRINCE, said on the café and books, “It was a challenge to design a café cum pub, and yet make the space friendly for book reading and a library. Yet the design weaves in the book club as an extension of your going out experience. So far, we have stocked up on interesting books on cooking, design and horoscopes along with popular fiction for adults, teenagers and plenty of activity books for little children.”
SHEFALEE VASUDEV, AUTHOR, THE POWDER ROOM, said, on Ludhiana’s reading culture, “I’m extremely happy to be in Ludhiana with my book Powder Room at this beautiful and unique café that has given me the opportunity to interact with the readers one-on-one in a very relaxed and comfortable atmosphere with some world class food and beverage. Also, the ambience and design of the place is totally in sync with the concept of having a literary space which I’ve come to launch.
"My book is not purely fashion-based, rather it is a tapestry of observations. For example, the individual stories on fashion represent how we are liberal when it comes to out clothing and attire, yet conventional when it comes to our thoughts and ideas – the book is a microcosm of the country’s contemporary culture", said Shefalee.
A Classic Fairytale by Brothers Grimm, ‘The Frog Prince’ is the story of how a spoilt princess reluctantly befriends a frog, eventually changing her own nature and transforming the frog into a handsome prince by breaking a wicked spell on him. While the original Grimm version indicates the change after the frog was flung against a wall, subsequent contemporary versions hold the romance dear – with a kiss to a night under the princess’ pillow; all working to transform the tale into pure magic.
Based on the famous story held dear to every child… and every adult who was once a child… comes ‘The Frog Prince’ – a place where mundane days transform into special experiences the moment you step in. Owner Gautam Garg represents that magical moment… which takes a city like Ludhiana, adds a bit of magic and romance, and converts it into a special offering for Punjab’s favourite city. He approached hospitality consultants, Under One Roof, to weave in a fairytale into the city – a posh address with the humility that emerges from sound hospitality fundamentals.
