Report by Santanu Ganguly: India's very own version of the internationally popular adult men's magazine Playboy, is undoubtedly Debonair magazine. This magazine has been around for more than 42 years now and has had veteran journalists as its editors like Vinod Mehta (currently Editor-in-Chief of the Outlook Group), Anil Dharkar (formerly also with Bombay Times) and many others.
The magazine, best known for its topless female centerfolds, was launched by journalist and gay activist Ashok Row Kavi and Anthony Van Braband in 1971. Under the current editorial management, Debonair was reformatted to remove nudity and target a younger demographic making it more of a lifestyle publication than a men's magazine. Says senior journalist and editor of content agency Newz66, Flynn Remedios - who worked with Debonair in 1992-93, "Debonair magazine has come a really long way from the heady days of Ashok Row Kavi, Vinod Mehta and Anil Dharkar. I remember the police raids on our office and all the court cases against the magazine particularly under India's infamous obscenity sections 292 IPC which does not really define obscenity at all. Debonair is an institution of free speech and creativity in India. One should not merely look at the nudes or topless women, it was more about freedom of expression. Nobody forces you to buy a copy of the magazine and the models would approach the editorial team directly. Even today many well-known actresses have featured on the covers of Debonair."
Some models like Ishika Borah have featured several times shooting nude or seminude. Debonair was a cult magazine and photographers interested in art or artistic nude photography considered Debonair to be lighthouse in a turbulent India for its rigid stand on the artistic freedom of expression, explains Remedios.
Bikini model Ritika Gulati recently featured on the cover of Debonair. She has done several other print and catalog shoots for garments and products. Having worked with several photographers, she has also done tele serials and films. Ritika Gulati was the 2nd runner up at the Miss Delhi 2012 beauty pageant and featured in article and on the cover of Aaj Ki Dilli magazine.
She was the cover girl of the Debonair 2012 issue. She has done a lead song in the movie Raja ke Raam Sai Ram, directed by Deepak Chavan and produced by Jignesh Soni. She also featured in an interview in a Sri Lankan paper Daily Mirror and has done ramp shows for British Airways with designer Alice Temperley in Feb 2013.
