EFT Report, Bangalore: After a mesmerizing Dhrupad concert by Uday Bhawalkar (who won encores), Bhoomija presents Kapila Venu in a Kutiyattam (Nangiar Koothu) performance. Kutiyattam is recognized as the oldest form of Theatre. It is declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. And the young Kapila Venu embodies this difficult art to present an extraordinary feast to the senses.
Kapila packs intensity, drama, sheer mastery over the art, and majesty of presentation to her performances. The traditional large oil lamp lights up her face, heightening every emotion. The very atmosphere the lamp, the drummers, the constant taalam played by another lady on the stage and the extraordinary Kapila Venu create is electrifying and unforgettable. No surprise that an audience member once remarked after a Kapila show, my eyes don’t want to watch any other performance for a long time to come!
A couple of lines from Brian Siebert’s review of her Sita Parityagam in the New York Times summarises Kapila’s performance -- All the characters were portrayed in mime and occasional bursts of song by one woman, the astounding Kapila Venu. She was not exactly alone. Behind her onstage were three drummers, providing accompaniment that for dramatic pacing and intensity few film composers with an orchestra at their disposal could match.
