EFT Report, Mumbai: The book Ten Years With Guru Dutt: Abrar Alvi’s Journey by Sathya Saran traces some never before exposed moments in the tumultuous and prolific career of one of India’s iconoclastic filmmakers, Guru Dutt; through the eyes of his close friend and confidante, scriptwriter Abrar Alvi.

Ten Years With Guru Dutt: Abrar Alvi’s Journey
To attempt a comprehensive account of Guru Dutt’s development is beyond the scope of an hour-and-a-half’s play. Hence, the presentation focuses on six stories behind some of India’s greatest cinema that highlight Abrar Alvi’s relationship with Guru Dutt, his contributions to Guru Dutt films and Dutt’s way of working.

The play moves between the old Abrar and the young Abrar, acting and narrating the stories that include the magical discovery of Waheeda Rahman by Guru Dutt, Meena Kumari’s dramatic entry into Saheb Bibi aur Ghulam, capturing the evocative beauty of Chaudhvi ka Chaand and the last night in Guru Dutt’s life. The play ventures to capture the magic, drama and nostalgia of the lives of characters who created some of our most memorable films.

Breaking away from the format of most plays, this production combines mime and screen clips from Guru Dutt films to create a complete experience.
