Report by Santanu Ganguly: A beautiful dancing saga by street children in sync with professional dancers. It was a treat to watch six street performers- Ravi, Chhavi, Kalpana, Bhoomi, Sonam and Veerta along with professional dancers from Urshilla Dance Company during an exciting dance production called 'Anurakti' at Kamani Auditorium, New Delhi on Friday evening. The stage was set on fire by the young artists with strong contemporary dancing blended with the techniques of Mayurbhanj Chhau and Lyrical Jazz, as well as nuances of Kathak and Street acrobats.
A contemporary dance production 'Anurakti' was choreographed, conceptualised and designed by Bhavini Misra and captured the journey of hope, despair, pain, conviction as it journeyed through the life of a little boy and girl who dance and beg on the streets and whose only dream is to become great dancers who perform on stage and are applauded for their art.
The journey kicked off with an opening act by dancers from UDC, followed by the street children whom Bhavini had seen on road side performing art of their own. As soon as the arc lights fell on a little girl, she did her somersaults at lightening speed, so effortlessly and was greeted by a huge round of applause. She along with other 5 children performed so beautifully on the stage and captured the attention amongst professionally trained dancers. These children regularly perform around Siri Fort Auditorium. Four of them are from Chhattisgarh while two are from Delhi.
It was a unique piece that explored contemporary dance with new dimensions of lighting and multimedia. The story showcased the emotions of a street performer's journey and how his future evolves when a dance company actually embraces him. The cause of this show was to better the lives of these kids as well as give young artists a sense of deep morale and great confidence.
"The idea is to dance for a cause. And these children are smart, have uncommon potential and need help to shape their future. These children have no dearth of talent, they just need to be given opportunity," says Bhavini Misra.
One of the children, Ravi was quite excited to perform on the stage, he said, all thanks to Bhavini Ma'am, today I'm performing on a big stage, I want to excel in this field and make it big in life."
