Report by Santanu Ganguly, Noida: Attero, India’s largest electronics asset management company, launched a week long E-Waste Workshop & Collection Drive at Sunriseville School, Noida, on the occasion of Earth Day on April 22, 2013. The E-Waste Workshop was launched as part of Attero’s initiative to generate awareness about the hazards of e-waste and educate students about the steps that need to be taken to manage e-waste in an environmentally friendly manner.
Running over a period of a week which would include a series of events and competitions to engage students and update them on the threats of hoarding old electronics and the harm it causes the environment and human health. The E-Waste Workshop was launched with an interactive presentation on E-Waste to help students gain an insight into the problem of e-waste, its constituents, its associated health hazards and the importance of proper recycling and disposal of old electronics.
A week long E-Waste Collection Drive contest is also being run as part of the workshop, so as to help create enthusiasm among students to collect the maximum amount of e-waste, and the class collecting the highest amount would be awarded. Attero would be placing e-waste collection bins in various places in the Sunriseville School campus, and parents would also be informed about the workshop, so that they can help their kids with e-waste collection.
Besides the Workshop and the Collection Drive, a Poster Competition and a Blog Writing Contest on the theme of e-waste recycling would also be running during the week, the winners of which would be announced at the end of the week long workshop.
Speaking about the initiative, Nitin Gupta, CEO of Attero said, “We are pleased to join hands with Sunriseville School, Noida as the issue of electronic waste has been plaguing the society and it’s high time to take steps towards addressing this issue. We at Attero believe awareness and collection is the first step towards managing e-waste and hence we have launched this programme. It is good to see institutions like Sunriseville School embracing their responsibility toward the environment for a greener and better tomorrow. We hope more and more kids realize this and come forth and do their bit for the society.”
According to studies, e-waste in India is all set to touch the 1.72 million metric ton mark by 2020. And about 95 percent of the e-waste is disposed of using hazardous and polluting techniques. Considering these figures, it’s imperative for every individual to take the necessary steps to manage e-waste in an eco-friendly manner. And to successfully do so, educating tomorrow’s generation is essential. Attero is keen on working with other schools and institutions and organizing more such events to create awareness about e-waste and eco-friendly e-waste disposal. So working in unison can make a lot of difference for a greener tomorrow.
