| ‘How I Learned to Drive’ Pulitzer Winning Drama |
Families tend to shape and scar us in equal measure. With wry humor and biting insight, playwright Paula Vogel poses adult-themed questions in a lyrical fashion that is sometimes funny, sometimes shocking, but always poignant.
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, How I Learned to Drive takes the audience on a complex emotional journey through the childhood of Li`l Bit, as she recounts her struggles growing up in a family of colorful characters and dark secrets.
Set in the 1960s in rural Maryland, the story follows the strained, sexual relationship between Li`l Bit and her Uncle Peck. Using the metaphor of driving and issues of incest and pedophilia, the play explores the ideas of control and manipulation.
Li`l Bit`s relationship with her Uncle Peck is as sweet as it is lethal, as paternal as it is codependent, as innocent as it is dark. With razor-sharp skill, Vogel takes us to places we`ve traveled in our past and puts our collective definitions of love, care and family to the test. It`s a play you`ll be debating long after the lights fade.
